I remember seeing a post about some Gen 2 trooper brake being direct fit to Gen 1.... believe it was possible to install the gen 2 larger sized disc and the calibers were larger. Can anyone point me to this info?

The search "Big Brake Mod" is your friend.

Note that this mod uses Gen II Trooper or Rodeo front brake components on an '88-'91 Trooper. Use the Gen II calipers, rotors, dust shields, and Rodeo front brake lines. You'll find tons of discussion using the aforementioned search.

I didn't change the brake booster when I did the mod. Haven't noticed any great change in pedal effort. Stops better, though!

This is one mod I wanted to do on my 89. I even got as far as going to the local junk yard and removing everything I thought I would need to complete the mod except I would buy new pads to put on when I installed everything.
I got to the checkout counter and the total for all the parts was well over 100 dollars. That was way to high and I left without anything.
I should have at least got the backing plates. Everything else can be bought new a Rockauto for not much more than junk yard prices except the backing plates.
Just make sure you get the mounting brackets for the calipers when you get all the parts.
Father time got away with me and I never did get this one worthwhile mod accomplished. Good luck with yours.

OE rotors are ventilated. What you're showing is cross-drilling and slots. Which do help improve braking feel and performance.

However, as was stated that has nothing to do with the Big Brake Upgrade, which installs the larger-diameter Gen II rotors, along with the compatible calipers, pads and dust shields.

It's the larger diameter that makes the diff in stopping power. You may or may not recall that this mod came from no other than our own Jerry Lemond. So I think he knows what he's doing!

I can attest that it works pretty dang good! Have to say that I not only installed the larger-dia Gen II rotors, but bought some that were slotted and cross-drilled! So it has a nice feel and stops very well. Definitely an upgrade if you're towing.

If ya gotta do what ya gotta do! Might be a bit crude but they'll work.

Backing plates = dust guards = rotor clam shells.

Yeah I wouldn't cut those but yea. What @itsmehb said. Go to a junkyard and grab the backing plates from a 95+ rodeo/passport or a 92+ trooper.
Your choice on calipers and caliper brackets because RA does indeed sell complete calipers WITH brackets.
Pads are cheap. Rotors are cheap-ish. But he's right, some PaP places are stupid expensive compared to new parts prices. Especially compared to brake items like these.
But if you get a deal at a yard and they're in okay condition, I say run it.

Rodeo Gen II brake hoses are what Jerry recommended. I had to twist mine a bit to fit, but they did work.

IDK if Gen II Trooper hoses would work better or worse.
