Turn signal problem 95 Rodeo

Postby Torquemonster » Fri Mar 27, 2015 1:18 am

My 95 Rodeo (square dash) seems to be acting up with the right side turn signal. it happened alot when I first bought it but it went away so I thought nothing of it but now its happening again and alot more often. When I turn the switch to right I just get a buzzing noise, I assume from the flasher relay but Im not sure. When its buzzing if I grab the stalk and hold it juts barely off of the right detent it starts flashing normally and also if I put the signal on slowly (Like hold the stalk in position before putting it in its detent) it works normally. I thought it was the flasher but it only happens on right, so Im not sure. Bad ground? bad switch? dirty contact? Ill try and get a video of the sound next time it happens

It's a dirty contact. Zero-cost repair but disassembling the 1st gen indicator switch will require the patience of Buddha

There are tiny springs and ball bearings that are not captive and you will lose one unless you take extreme care

Clean up the copper contacts with fine emery paper and then slather them in a dielectric grease and you'll be good for another 20 years

It can be done with the switch on the vehicle once you pull the wheel... close the windows and doors and cover yourself and everything else with the biggest sheet or blanket you can find to catch the parts when they fly AND FLY THEY WILL.

I did it, I pulled the wheel and took the switch off the column but ai didnt unplug it. Parts didnt go flying either, I popped up the contact board just enough to get my contact cleaner strip on the right side contact, and I smeared a bit dielectric grease ln there, hasnt messed up again yet

AND FLY THEY DIDNT. lol.

(I was just warned they would and was glad i was ready.)

Since the recommended fix is replacing the switch feels good to repair it and save $$$ huh... the power window master cluster switch gets the same gremlin. Carbon buildup. It can be serviced but getting the lockout switch right upon reassembly is tricky.

Well my 95 pickup is doing similar except when I turn the r. side I can hear tick tick tick tick but no flasher. Could it be the turn signal relay switch under the dash?
