First Gen - Radio Cutting out - High Voltage?

Postby Duntov » Tue Nov 10, 2020 11:59 am

Hey there, I have a strange voltage issue that I'm curious how yall would troubleshoot:

- First noticed that my new stereo would cut out repeatedly (no power) when the car was cold and I would rev the motor up. After the car had run for a while, it is fine
- Then noticed that on those same occasions, my windshield wipers would run double speed
- currently thinking that after cranking the cold car, maybe it is putting out too much voltage and the stereo is actually shutting itself off?
- I am pretty confident of the stereo's ground, although that would be the logical thing to check if it was happening all the time

do you have a voltmeter you could put across the battery. after the alternator is charging you should see high 13 to low 14 volts. for instance 13.7 to 14.3 or in that general range. that would be a quick test to see if your hypothesis is worth investigating.

I do, I'll check that first.
