Identifying my transmission

Postby pvtlair834 » Sat Apr 17, 2021 3:44 am

Hi, this is my first post ever on a forum like this so please be easy on me, lmao. I had just bought a 1991, (1992 according to the manufacture date, I think, not sure), Isuzu I-series pickup. I've worked on American makes for most of my life and this is my first foreign car make I've owned and I'm having a hard time trying to figure out the transmission model. I've read that GM has had a play in the models here in the US, but I don't recognize the transmission. The truck has a 2.6 4ZE1 in it and it's a 2WD with overdrive. Any help would be greatly appreciated because it has a rough shift and delay, and doesn't seem to want to shift into my 3rd gear.

I don’t think you have an I series truck. Don’t think they started that far back, nor came with a 2.6. You probably have an Isuzu pickup, known other markets as a KB.

I believe it should be an Aisin AW30 of some sort

I can provide pictures the moment I can figure out how to, but it may be an AW30 model of a sort.I've never seen a transmission with a dipstick tube go into the pan and the AW30 looks like it does too

Definitely not an I-Series. Not even close.

From 1988-1995 Isuzu sold their own trucks using the creative "Pickup" name. ;)

In 1996 Isuzu punted and rebadged the Chevy S10 as their "Hombre".

The I-Series made its US debut around 2006. It definitely did not have the 4ZE1 2.6L engine available.

I don't remember the details about that transmission, other than that it should be an Aisin. Your truck is probably labeled as a "Sport" version. They came with the overdrive-equipped automatic transmissions. JLEMOND has said several times that they're good ones (you'll learn about him once you've been here a little while).

Here are the pictures of both the engine and transmission. And it does have overdrive on it, so that's a big help
