1991 Trooper Engine Game Plan

Postby Docloucks » Thu Apr 15, 2021 10:28 am

I'm onto my 4th Trooper, first one in quite a while... Just picked up a '91 Trooper LS with 2.6l I4 F. The previous owner's mechanic says it has a severe rod knock. So my question is; Keep the original motor and have it rebuilt locally (Northern California) or look online for another that has been rebuilt and just swap them out. I'd love some advice...

Saw that one on craigslist! Looked clean. There's a member on here Shawn Anthony in Reno who should have what you need to get rolling ie. purchasing a rebuilt 4ZE1

I went with a new reman ATK engine 13 yrs and 35k miles ago when the OE head gasket failed for second time at 175k miles. Had a good shop install it and it was good until it overheated blowing the head gasket AGAIN! The over heating was due to a failed heater hose. I put an after market heavy casting cylinder head on it then with no A.I.R. holes. Felpro gaskets. Its been fine since.

The reman engine is bored .050 over.

Rebuild it yourself. If I did it, anyone can do it.

thanks for the info. I am more inlcined to buy a rebuilt and remove install on my own vs doing the internal rebuild portion myself, need to save some energy for the cosmetics. clean good bones to start from. Excited to get it rolling.

I would rebuild over buying another engine. If you rebuild, you know what you have.

Biggie on "rebuild vs replace" is crank end play / thrust bearings. Check crank end play (back and forward) if it moves like an eighth of an inch, the thrust bearings ar e shot and the block and crank are probably junk. Dennis
