2001 Trooper Intermittant P0405 code

Postby AlanMac » Mon Dec 28, 2020 6:34 pm

Hi All, As the title says.... I replaced my EGR valve ~ 3 years ago with a NAPA brand EGR valve and cleaned out the EGR tube and it seemed all my EGR related problems were solved. This year occasionally the check engine light has been illuminated wit a P0405 code. It either goes away on its own or I clear it with my bluedriver. No performance or drivability issues are noted with the code. I unplugged / replugged the red PCM connector and the EGR connectors. No physical connector or wiring problems were observed. The P0405 reappeared in a few weeks. From reading the manual and previous posts on this problem, it seems I should check the wiring from the PCM to the EGR. The schematic in the manual shows these five wires ( from right to left order) at the EGR connector. black/red, black/yellow green, yellow/red, red/blue. I looked at the connector and the wires appear to not be in this specific order. In the manual it says that the red/blue wire is 5V reference. It also says: check 5V with the ignition on, probe the red/blue wire terminal to ground for 5V. than check with the ignition off, probe the red/blue wire terminal to ground for resistance between 5 - 5.5K ohms. Assuming that is correct and all is good, I would think that the EGR pintle position wire (x < .1V) voltage should be checked. I assume this is the black/yellow wire? Any feedback to debug this problem is appreciated. Alan

The color codes may not match but this how the EGR is wired
I am 99% certain if you replace the EGR with an OEM part the problem will go away.

I unplugged the connector and measured the resistance between the pintle position pin (3) and the ground pin (1) on the EGR per your schematic pinout. The pins 1 > 3 resistance was an open circuit. The spec in my manual is R = 1 to 1.25 K Ohm. So the verdict is the EGR is bad. UPDATE: I bought a used 8-17096-178-3 EGR valve with 1 year protection, I hope this is the right one! https://www.ebay.com/itm/General-Motors ... 2749.l2649

I don't think that is the correct EGR valve for your engine,

The part number listed did not show up as applicable to your year engine.
Also, measuring Pin 3 to Pin 1 on the EGR valve would be open circuit because they are two different circuits.

Per the schematic I agree. The trouble shooting procedure in my Isuzu manual says to check the R per above. Is the OEM part number 8-17096-178-3 correct? Should the complete P/N be on the top of the EGR plastic housing.

Update: I un-plugged and re-plugged the connectors and have been driving for a few weeks on and off. No check engine light. I guess the NAPA EGR is ok.

Maybe the electrical connector pins were initially not making good contact with the EGR valve pins.

That's what I think also. The Connector terminals and wires look good. There are a number of things that can cause higher contact resistance in separable connectors. I added a small amount of electrical lube to the EGR blade terminals.

The EGR problem is back. Does anyone know if this EGR valve is correct for my 2001 Trooper?

Does anyone know if Delphi was the original EGR Valve manufacturer?

Rock Auto lists DELPHI EG10175 (Alternate/OEM Part Number(s): 17114573, 8170961780, 8170961782, 8170961783)
as the OE EGR Valve. Summit lists DELPHI EG10175 as Actual OE Part in the application notes for my 2001 trooper. I just don't want to spend another $125 for an incompatible part.

I bought the Delphi EGR valve and put a new set of spark plugs in. initially I noticed the trooper engine runs smoother. Hopefully it translates into better gas mileage. Update: The engine runs great with the Delphi EGR Valve and gets better gas mileage. Problem fixed!
