700r4 swap into 2000 Rodeo (completed)

Postby valkyn » Sat Feb 27, 2021 4:25 pm

The 4L30E crapped out in my 2wd 2000 Rodeo; lost 3rd and 4th gear. The sad thing is that the trans had been rebuilt about 30000 miles ago (before I purchased the vehicle).

Not wanting to put any more time or money into such a piece of crap transmission, I looked into swapping in a 700r4 trans. I found a few threads of people speculating if it would work or not and one where a guy installed one into a trooper but never finished the build.

I decided what the hell and purchased a freshly rebuilt trans I found locally for $450. Only problem was that it was out of a four wheel drive.

Image

I purchased the correct 2wd output shaft, a hardened sun shell, heavy duty band and tail shaft housing and installed everything.

The only part of the transmission case I had to modify was the right hand flange. I cut about 3/4" off to get it to clear the exhaust. That bolt hole wasn't being used anyway.

Image

The torque converter sits about 11mm further back than the 4L30E unit so I stacked up some washers and tacked them to the converter to shim it. I did not have to cut the snout.

Image

The stock rear trans cross member was reused. I had to cut the pedestal off and flip it around to compensate for the 700r4's mount being further toward the front of the vehicle. The top plate on the mount also had to be changed to account for the different bolt spacing of the 700r4 mount.

Image

The shift pattern is the same on the 700 and the 4L30 so I was able to reuse the stock shifter. The stock shift encoder also works with the longer shift shaft out of a 4L60E. This probably wasn't really necessary since I ended up having to use ECM from a manual transmission rodeo, but when the trans is in park it closes the clutch safety switch so overall I'm not mad.

The shift arm is stock; I opened up the rectangular bore in the center with a file to accommodate the 4L60E's larger shaft.

Image

I fabbed up a bracket to mount the stock shift cable onto two of the diagonal bell housing bolt holes on the 700r4.

Image

The tail shaft housing was the mechanical speedo type, and I was able to reuse the stock digital speed sensor by filing down the coupling shaft to fit into the 700r4 driven speedo gear. I did the math to calculate that I needed a 15 tooth drive and 42tooth driven gear to get the correct speedometer reading. The stock speed sensor screwed right onto the mechanical speedo threads.

Since the 3.2 v6 uses an electrical throttle body I couldn't connect the TV cable to it. I ended up adding brackets to mount in onto the gas pedal.

With the automatic trans ECM the service engine light is on. It has code P0753 for shift solenoid A and P1860 for TCC solenoid. You might be able to wire in some resistors or something and get ride of the codes, but I had already gotten the ECM from a manual vehicle at a local scrap yard so I am using it to pass inspection.

I am going to use the TCI vacuum controlled lock up kit to control the torque converter lockup. https://www.tciauto.com/2004r-700r4-loc ... g-kit.html

The truck drives great with the 700r4. After all the parts I think I spent around $1000 for the swap. Not bad considering a local shop quoted me $2300 to rebuild the POS 4L30E.

If anyone has any questions or wants better pictures of anything please let me know. Would be happy to help.

Did you have to change the crankshaft bushing to fit the 700R4 torque converter?
Is that a custom length propeller ("drive") shaft?
Do the two engine to bell alignment dowels match any holes in the 700R4 bell?

I didn't change the crankshaft bushing. The converter snout was slightly larger then the 4L30e's, but it still fit in the crank.

The driveshaft is "custom" but several companies sell them off the shelf. I got mine from Southwest speed; they have from 27" to 68" in 1/2" increments. https://www.southwestspeed.com/?sec=vie ... riveshafts

A local drive line shop said it was minimum $250 to shorten the stock shaft plus the cost of new u-joints. I got the brand new one that included u-joints and the trans slip yolk for $200.

The two alignment dowels matched. Its hard to see in the picture I have of the faces of both transmissions but they are in the same spots.

Very nice work! What about the wiring? I’m not familiar with a 700r4 and was wondering what you did with the vehicle wiring to the trans. Thanks

The 700r4 is a fully mechanical transmission. The only electronics it has are for the torque converter lockup solenoid (which I'm controlling with the TCI vacuum switch kit I linked at the bottom of my first post).

As far as the factory wiring for the 4L30E, I reused the shift encoder and speed sensor. All the other harnesses were just left unplugged.

Thanks, interesting, might do this in an 01 Trooper, I have a $250 junkyard 4l30e I it, just to get it driving once I bought it, ( I didn’t know any better) and I don’t know how long it will last.
