Possible 4L30E AT to NV4500 MT swap?

Postby 01IsuzuTrooper » Mon Dec 14, 2020 12:04 am

I have an 01’ Trooper with the “wonderful” 4L30E and TOD, and I’m thinking of swapping for a manual transmission, I know about the AR5 swap with TOD will work with the correct Isuzu version, but I cannot find one, but I’ve only been looking for 2 weeks. Today I have to pull the NV4500 out of my 1992 GMC C1500 work truck with a 4.3l V6, to put a clutch, throw-out bearing, and a seal in, and I really like how it shifts, how the power band and the gear ratios work with the V6 and got the gears in my mind to grinding.

To get to the point, has anyone swapped at NV4500 or maybe even an NV3500 (although I’ve never seen or had experience with them) into a 2nd gen Trooper? Thanks Liam

It would definitely be cool. The 1st gear is quite low so it is pretty sweet for off road. I believe however, that the NV4500 was never used behind the 4.3L. Are you sure you don't have a NV3500? The 4500 is easily identified by it's iron main case. The 3500 is all aluminum. Getting and NV4500 to bolt to an Isuzu may be possible by using a NV bell housing from a DODGE/Jeep 2.5L 4cyl and NV1500 trans. I know it will bolt to your engine but not 100% sure if it will bolt the bigger NV4500 to the bellhousing.

Off the road for an overhaul right now.

Yes, it was an NV4500. Aluminum bell housing, top cover, and 2 WD adapter, and gearbox was cast-iron. I tore it down because of the leak, rinsed out with Kerosene, refilled and shifts better than ever.

But it’s a big gearbox, might need a body lift to do it but would be cool,

I thought the same thing when I saw that it was behind the 4.3 when the same one was behind the Dodge Cummins 5.9? But I like it, great mpg and can pull anything I want.

What I found was interesting though, when I tore it apart, the gears still had the manufacturing marks from when they were cut back in the early 90s. So, very strong even after 150,000 miles! GM and Isuzu stuff is great! (except for the excuse of a AT 4l30e the they trick Isuzu with)

I will try to put up some pictures.

But if my 3.5l ever goes, I am thinking about putting a Chevy 292 straight-six, and NV4500 with an NP transfer case, (I haven’t decided yet) swap into it, and maybe a straight axle conversion and couple inch lift, if it is available and not a pain to do, (later, down the road)

Or maybe a 4.3 instead of the 292, who knows, just dreams for now...

Not sure the 292 would fit under the Isuzu hood. The 4.3L would be a great option. I would be VERY interested in getting the latest 4.3L from GM working under the hood of an old 4X4. It has LT architecture and is all aluminum. The short engine (shorter than a V8) would leave room in front for the rad and fan. It is 285hp and just over 300ft.lbs of torque. It has 250ft.lbs of torque at 2000RPM. It would be powerful without being over the top for the Isuzu axles. It uses the ubiquitous GM V8 bellhousing pattern so transmission and transfer case choices are vast.

The other engine I would consider, aside from my GM 60 degree V6 of course, would be the 3800 simply because it bolts up to the transmission which saves a ton of cost. It also has great aftermarket, it is easily supercharged and is one of the most reliable engines in the world.

Thanks for that, but his is this “3800” engine you mentioned? I’ve never heard of it, is it a inline or a V engine? And a 4 or 6 or what cylinder? Thanks

It is the late model derivative of the Buick 3.8L. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buick_V6_engine
