Discuss anything related to drivetrain mods here (Engine &Transmission Swaps, lift, gearing, exhaust, etc)

I have a 1991 Isuzu trooper with a 2.8l engine. The chassis is pretty much stock PO replaced motor and tranny. I put an s10 Blazer body on it lifted 9in off the frame running 35x12.50x15's. Is it possible to swap the 4l30e tranny out for the aw30-80le tranny? Like will the TCM be able to talk to it and such? Or should I stay with the stock tranny. And I don't want to go manual BTW. Or what would you recommend I should run for a transmission that would hold up. Old tranny got hot and burned up after the front brakes locked up on me 20 miles from the house.

I am reasonably sure a 4L30e TCM cannot properly control a AW30-80LE.
The AW30-80LE was used with the 2.6L 4cyl, I don't know if it will bolt up to the V6 engine.
I do not recall anyone in the the forum in last 10 years replacing a 4L30e with a AW30-80LE
One member installed a AW30-40LE from a 04 Rodeo in 3.5L Trooper.

Ok thanks for the info

How about a 4x4 trans out of a GM LS4 5.3. IIRC the LS has a 60-degree bellhousing pattern same as the 2.8. Might be some serious mods to make it work but at least with a 4L60E or something like that, you'd have a chance of it surviving. Any GM trans like that, that you get used, should be upgraded with a kit such as these 2:https://transpartswarehouse.com/4l60e-l ... f4adf85e28https://transpartswarehouse.com/4l60e-h ... 555abebb87
You can get a stand-alone controller which takes inputs from the TBI system, so it won't need a separate TCM, which greatly simplifies things. Heck, you already have a lift, you could just scrap the wimpy 2.8 and put an LS in there!!! https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nkw=4L ... e&_sacat=0

BTW there exists an Edelbrock kit for under $1000 that will run an LS with a carb. The MSD ignition uses the cam and crank sensors to fire the ign, so there's no distributor to deal with. Couldn't be simpler!https://www.speedwaymotors.com/Edelbroc ... 8bf79146d0

Good to know. Thanks for the info. I may have to swap the motor to the 350 I have in my 88 k1500 just to make all this come together a little smoother. And I was just looking for a cheap temporary solution till I can get up some money for the msd stand alone tranny control. It's like 700 and I was gonna get a monster rebuilt transmission to throw in it probably a 4l60e might go with a 700r4 though haven't decided yet.

700r4 from a 2.8 blazer (2wd from camaros as well) would work and no electronic control needed. You may need a manual ECM for your motor at that point. Also you'd need to find a tcase with a pass side drop (241c from a late 80's early 90's full size chevy may work with GM factory adapters).
You could technically use an a340, using the late model axiom/rodeo bellhousing. Could manually control it with a RA Designs shifter, or work out a way to use an existing TCM. It would be some frankenstein'ing but it could be done.

S10 700R4 would have the starter on the pssgr's side, so you'd have to modify the bell housing to clear the driver's-side starter on the Trooper 2.8.
The S10 700R4 is a pretty small trans, will it hold up? Maybe easier to beef-up the 700R4 than it is to do it to a 4L30E.

Good point. The 60* 700r4 is not that much weaker than the 90* pattern version they put behind the 4.3, 5.0, and 5.7. They can be built to handle whatever you want to throw at it.

That's good to know! Then it sounds like you can built a 700R4 that would hold up way better than the stock 4L30E, maybe we're onto something here! It shouldn't be that big of a deal to modify the bell housing for a starter on the driver's side.
And if I'm not mistaken, doesn't the Trooper 2.8 automatic use a divorced transfer case? That should make things easier yet.
If things worked out well with that mod, then perhaps a Gen II Trooper could be refit with a 700R4.
Lord Knows there are plenty of Gen II Troopers out there with dead 4L30E's!! I see 'em almost every day in the PNW Craigslist!
What's getting really rare are nice Gen I Troopers. After 30+ years they are finally getting into their own, as a collector's item.
I love my '90 with the 3.4 Camaro engine and 5-speed, ain't Never gettin' rid of it!!

The AW30-40LS used with 2004 Axiom and 2004 Rodeo with the 3.5L GDI engine is good for about 500hp and should bolt right up to the 2.8 engine because it has the same bell housing configuration as a 4L30e. However, the 2004 Axiom and Rodeo TCM uses a CANBUS interface to get engine data so it is not plug and play installation.
The AW30-40LS is a heavy duty version of the AW30-40LE. The 2003 Axiom and Rodeo have a AW30-40LE installed and also use a CANBUS TCM. Interestingly, in Toyota world the AW30-40LE is called the A340E and there are aftermarket transmission controllers for A340 series transmissions.
There is topic in forum on installing a AW30-40LE in a Trooper. https://forum.planetisuzoo.com/viewtopic.php?t=33787

The tcase to the 4L30 is married, although it's not integrated like the MUA5. A custom adapter would need to be made. The 27 spline output shaft does slide right into the zu case, confirmed myself. The tailshaft/output cover on my 2wd 700r4 and the adapter for the zu case are both cast aluminum, which is a little out of my league as far as metals gluing. There was a vehicross guy that put an LS + 700r4/4L60 to zu case with a custom tcase adapter, so it has been done.
