15x8" wheels on a 1986 Trooper

Postby tholley » Fri Apr 23, 2021 12:36 pm

Hi folks,

I dug around on here (and the interwebs generally) but couldn't find the specific info I'm looking for.

I'm looking to replace (what I think are) stock 15x6" wheels on a 1986 Trooper (2.3L gas) with these https://www.jegs.com/i/JEGS/555/681114/10002/-1 or something similar. The backspace (3.75"), bolt pattern (6x5.5), and hub (108) all seem to match up with what the Trooper needs, but the rims are 2" wider. I'm planning to put a 235/75/15 tire on them.

Does anyone have any experience putting 15x8" rims on an '86 Trooper that isn't lifted? Any rubbing? If there is, would a small lift solve it without having to trim anything down? I'm also open other wheel and tire ideas if anyone has a favorite setup they run.

I should also add: I'm very much a noob to all of this so please forgive any misused terminology and general ignorance!

Many thanks in advance!

Tim,
Early Troopers came with 15x6 wheels and 225x75x15 tires. In 89 the RS model and certain LS 4 doors came with 15x7 wheels commonly called snowflakes. The 15x7 snowflakes came with 31x10.5x 15 tires. You can run a 235x75x15 on a 15x6 wheel with no problem. My opinion is the 8 inch is overkill. I'll include a pic of my 89 with the 15x7 snowflakes with 31x10.5x15's Seems most comfortable running 60 to 65 on highway. Probably would run 70 all day long, but with the 4.77 rear that's to excessive for my driving.

Thanks for the reply and info. I pulled the trigger on some 15x7s wheels and 235/75/15 Toyo A/Ts. Will post pics when they're mounted up.

Your RS looks amazing!

Your truck looks awesome! I made the mistake of buying 16" snowflakes so now I can't mount them without doing the lift. Bought some of the early aluminum 5 spoke wheels from a junk yard but they are only 15x6 I think and can only hold a 235/75/15. Looks better with the mud tires I have on it but not nearly as good as yours. Is yours lifted at all; new springs, cranked torsion bars etc?
