3rd times the charm...The kids low budget Rodeo build

Postby Torquemonster » Sat Jan 24, 2015 12:05 am

Edit: Changed the thread title to something less boring :P

So heres a backstory, Back in June I had a single cab ranger, I wanted something bigger and went looking for a Trooper or a Rodeo, but at the time there werent any good ones. Then this 2000 Explorer came up for $500 in decent shape, and I settled. I never really liked it, it was heavy and it took offroad like it was alot bigger than it was. On monday my GF told me about a 2nd gen trooper on craigslist she saw. It was a bit too much for me $1500 and those 2nd gens are almost as big as the Explorer, but it led to more searching. Then I found this rodeo, went and looked at it, fell in love, and snagged it for $950. I bought this entire thing on a random impulse :P

Heres the specs, early 1995 model (square dash), 3.2 V6, 5 speed, 4x4, auto hubs. Doesnt have any power options, or anything really, I guess its the base model. Doesnt really matter much to me :P It runs nice. The seller even dropped it off at my dads place :P The Explorer went tonight, Im going without A car for most of saturday then in the evening its getting insured :P My dad took it for a boot, he first said the clutch slipped badly, but he said its been getting better, so maybe its just from not being driven very often (The trooper he just bought did that). I didnt take any pictures of it myself, but heres the picture from the ad

Image

So the preliminary plans, are to bedline the rockers, get a stereo in it, drive it. My dad has had a few troopers in the past and has lifted all of them using parts he built, so Ill get him to make me a set of shackles and balljoint spacers as well. I ordered a set of 33x12.5 R15 Yokohama Geolanders for my Explorer just before I decided to buy the rodeo, and it would be a shame to not put them to good use :P ANyways Ill get more posted tomorrow maybe, cheers!

Well I finally got to drive it and I transferred my insurance onto it, I like it! The steering is a bit sloppy, the clutch slips up hill, and it needs a flasher relay, but I like it! Its too dark for pictures, but maybe in the morning Ill post some.

Does the hydraulic clutch on the 3.2 have any sort of adjustment? The clutch is fine when ts cold but when it warms uo it slips up hills. Is there any adjustment at the slave?

I just read on the interwebs that the linkage between the clutch pedal and the master is adjustable, and if its mis adjusted, The clutch will be fine when its cold but when the Engine warms up it expands the fluid in the clutch line, and if the pedal is mis adjusted it can hold the clutch slightly disengaged. Thats exactly what Im experiencing so Im gonna adjust that linkage and see what happens

Well, Had to do an unplanned brake job. I looked through the drivers rear rim and saw that half of the pad contact surface on the rotor was rusted. "Oh great, the caliper is seized" I thought. I pulled it in to my work at the end of the day, I was going to see if the calipers were seized so I knew what all to order. and well, the caliper piston was moving, however the slide pins were seized solid. I snapped the first slide bolt I tried to remove, so I stopped there, put it back together, limped it to the parts store and then home and did my brakes :P Now Im definetly out of money this week! :D

Image

Also on monday a guy at work gave me 3 aluminum 4runner rims, Figured Id throw one on since the wheels were off :P Im debating between cleaning them up and leaving them silver, painting all black, or painting the face black and leaving the lip around the outside silver

Cheers all!

Took it on a quick off road run today, in its stock glory :P This is where I found that the limited slip is a little worn out in that old D44, may be time for an upgrade...

So I did the first real 'mod', Glasspack exhaust, with a turn down before the axle. Ive had this setup on my last 2 trucks and it hasnt dissapointed, and it still doesnt dissapoint me
Image

Also adressed the drivers rear door, and the fact that it wont open. I hid in the parts room at work and went on Mitchell and looked for a TSB on the rear door not opening and I found one, the release lever will rust and not move. So I made the tool they told me to make
Image

Then I pressed the lever they told me to press
Image

Then I got the door to open, so I did the sensible thing and took the door panel off, cause I couldnt work on it at that time. I sprayed the latch with WD40 and closed the door. Today I moved the release lever around, and I got the door to open from the outside but not the inside, and then nothing at all. So Ill go in and lube it some more tomorrow. I may also throw my 33s on since my dad will be making my shackles and BJ spacers sometime this week, and I can lft it soon. It should be ok on 33s for a short time, my GF is having minor medical problems and she doesnt feel well enough to go wheeling right now, shes my wheeling partner and I dont go without her, so the truck is pavement only for the next while :P

So I got around to lifting it! I did the shackles after work tuesday night so no before pics to compare, I also didnt take any before measurements so I have no idea how much lift I got but the shackles I put in were about twice as long as stock ones 8) Then today I did the front, BJ spacer and torsion twist, I cranked it up about 2.5" (I think, again no before measurements) but I may go more. I cranked them according to what my dad said, which is that every 4 turn of the adjuster bolt equals an inch, which seems to be pretty close

Just shackles :

So, this past saturday work was super dead in the afternoon, so I brought the truck in to the bay farthest from the office, and I dropped the skidplate, wire brushed and painted the frame behind it, then I scuffed and painted the skidplate all in about 10 minutes :P
Image

Then in the last 15 mjnutes of the workday I washed it, this time I asked permission :P
Image

I did that so I could start doing the rockerguard from the bodyline down.

I only did the drivers side for now I had somewhere to go but I like how it turned out. Cheers for now!

Alright so I finished the rockerguard a couple days ago. Today I started the first part of cleaning the interior up, with the shift boots and the shifter bezel. I forgot before pictures again (Really gotta get with that) but it was nasty, it actually looked like a bird had pooped on the bezel. I ran it through the dishwasher and cleaned up the boot with a wet cloth and she looks good as new!

Image

I like how the shift boots are wrapped around a wire frame that clips into the bezel, makes taking it all apart and putting together easy
Image

Back in the truck, gonna try to get the stains out of the carpet. Windex has worked well in the past so I gotta try that

So I took it up the local mountain for a quick jaunt this morning. I noticed a trail off the main road I never noticed before but the old worn out LSD in that D44 wouldnt let me get up there, and I didnt want to risk an un familiar trail alone
Image
Image

Had the RF right in the air and the LR barely on the ground, and those 2 wheels got the power :P
Image

Some more flexy pics, walks right up it with the bigger tires on it!

I almost tried this puddle too... It gets pretty deep in the middle. It started ok then my 33 was mostly underwater so I backed outta there too, didnt want to chance it alone

Really nice pics of how the 4x4 Zu looks and performs off road. Like the 33's and the black on the lower part of exterior. Did you use herculiner? Smart move, backing out of that water hazard.

Thanks!

So since my GF has been feeling alot better, my gf, dad, younger siblings and I loaded up our Isuzus and went up the trails around Stave Lake BC for a few hours Yesterday. It was nice to get a good solid day in, even though it was raining most of the time.
Image

What Ive learned with the first real trip out is that the 4.10s on 33s S U C K in any off road situation. We went on some rocks and alot of steep uphill climbs. 4 hi is basically useless. Tried a short hill in 2wd, make it up to the last 5 feet and wouldnt go anyore, and in 4 hi there wasnt even enough torque to turn the driveline, just slipped the clutch. Even 4 lo isnt quite low enough. I have a line on 4.55 gears, I really hope it improves it somewhat. And the 33s rubbed like crazy. Im gonna bash in the corner where the floorboard goes up to the firewall cause thats the main problem.

I thought I made it outta there damage free but I guess a tire caught the top corner of the bumper (didnt notics that till after work today!)
Image

The tire looks ok so just bumper damage. But on the plus side after that trip the heater control panel illumnation started working!

Thanks!

So the other day I set about a broken tow hook bolt. Removed the hook for painting the frame and one of the bolts snapped, Im suprised the other one didnt. The rust had really eaten away the shank of the bolt. Im just glad I didnt need to get pulled out of something on it before! This one was really stuck in there
Image

Im glad I had enough left to get some vice grips, but still wasnt enough to turn it. Then I heated the living heck out of it, and I was able to get a tiny bit of movement. I could get 1/8th of a turn if I worked the bolt back and forth a bunch. Didnt have much working room
Image

But after an hour I got it! And when I bought replacement bolts I forgot washers, doh!
Image

Also the bumper was catching the tire sometimes in its bent state, so out came the farm jack. Its not perfect but its better than it was when I bought it!
Image
Image

Ill be making some tube bumpers in the future for it. I also bashed in the inner fenders for more clearance. The drivers side is the happy medium between just enough clearance and Full clutch pedal travel so that will do, but the passenger side I think Ill cut it out and weld in a plate since the only thing I would lose is legroom for teh girlfriend :P Now the 33s only rub on the frame (at full lock) and the bumper bracket on the drivers side, which will be resolved when I make my front bumper

So yesterday I went in to clean the turn signal switch up, i was just buzzing sometimes on right. First thing I noticed is that all of the steering column bolts were loose
Image

Evidence of previous tampering, the blue one is power for the accessory side of the ignition switch, and the green one with the wire tap is for the door chime thing, it was cut and the tap is just to hold it together again
Image

And in a situation where you are too lazy to walk back to the garage, the 4 way lug wrench can be used for the steering wheel nut, just remember to mark the alignment of the steering wheel on the shaft! ( I didnt, and had to pull it off twice)
Image

Also hooked up some LEDs behind the grille, they are pretty bright. I work in a tire shop and there were on our new service truck. They are bright and they are cheap, and the case is steel so pretty stout. Heres a mock up and test
Image

Mounted and mostly wired
Image

Lights off vs. on. Its hard to tell with the streetlights on but they are bright. First one is no LEDs or headlights, second is just LEDs, no headlights

Still fighting the lifter tick, some treatment seemed to help but its still there. Might go in and do the lifters while I do the valvecover gaskets

Started building my rear bumper today... Me and a buddy went in on a JD2 bender a while back. He just so happened to owe me 10 feet of .120 wall tubing, so I went to pick that up as well as the bender and I ended up with this. Its 1.5" tubing

Im going for something like this

Not yet I havent had time to go pick up more tubing

I have been playing with HD tierods though... Using the parts that Geoffinbc used for his. I got one side in, but the 2nd adjuster sleeve they sent me had 2 right hand thread jamb nuts, instead of a left and a right, so I returned it and got another amd it also had 2 right hand thread jamb nuts -.- Im at work and ordering all the parts through work, waiting on my 3rd adjuster sleeve set...

Geoff found different, off the shelf parts that work with little modification. Alot cheaper than Indys stuff and readily available. Not that I dont want to support indy, its just Im a broke teen :p
