I managed to get one picture to upload :(

Image

Took a drive on the first of the year and found some snow !! This is my friend I’ve kniwn since I was like 12 , back then I drove them nuts racing around in my Datsun pickup covering the laundry they had hanging outside with dust lol

Now his son has has a baby and as a matter of fact that was the first time for him up in the snow , kinda cool how things go around ...

By the way I picked up an Ls motor for a certain big trooper ... I know , idiot :(

Good grief can’t even remember how to post a picture correctly

Great picture. Being here in Texas, where it's mostly flat, I can really appreciate a picture like that. Mt hood I'm guessing, Or second guess would be Mt St. Helens

That’s Mt hood , St Helen’s is a little flatter on top .. I saw it a couple days ago glowing white with all its glory though ...

I’m starting to make some headway towards the new power plant , the gasket style is interesting , spendy but comparatively about the same as Isuzu stuff ... The bonus , I can upgrade just about any part !! I’m going to see about getting the cam reprofiled into a 400hp plus one ...

If you noticed the vx in the background I’ve been going through it rebuilding stuff and replacing/upgrading what needs to be , doing a body lift on these causes a buttload of extra work for the bumpers to fit again !! It’ll be a sweat rig for my buddy Ray once it’s all done ...

Holy cow! I forgot how detailed and nuts you can get with your isuzu.

Can't wait to see how that LS goes, just remember if you need parts and that are hard to find or expensive by you let me know cause I do work at a chevy dealer in the parts department and have access to a bunch of resources :D

Of course I read this after the engines put together :D

Everything’s kinda been a battle , my flywheel that I ordered went to the Grange Haul next to my work and was locked inside for a couple days till people happened to be there , that was a pain ... Next my pushrods where stolen out of my mailbox at home , hence shipping everything to work and getting the correct address saved in my phone (still can’t figure that out but oh well) ... I also ended up buying a different flywheel that had a larger surface area for the clutch disc .. Then the headers (buying on line sucks in a way) I don’t have the foggiest how they can sell this stuff that doesn’t fit very well, passenger side header , second runner had such a sharp bend right off the flange that you couldn’t even install the spark plug let alone a spar plug wire ... I cut and pulled it out and added an inch of tube .. The driverside front runner pipe curved down and laid right on top of the motor mount (factory ones too) !! I built my own trans shifter assembly so the location would actually come up through the shifter hole/location instead of the firewall ..

The picture order is backwards but it goes right along with all the bassakwards issues I’ve had lol

I got the drivelines figured out yesterday , today I made a shifter rod for the tcase , it’ll need a little finess but it’s in there .. Mainly I need to get the ecu flashed and buy a radiator then do my wiring and it’ll be ready to fire off .. Plenty of little things left like alternator and maf , besides that the hardest parts figured out ...

Got the trooper up and running , yesterday I took it down to work so I could finish the exhaust and get the radiator mounted ..

I used power wires left over from the Isuzu engine wiring harness one lead was operating on lower voltage and seemed to be cycling on and off , just happened to be hooked up to the fuel pump relay which threw me off until I finally got the data link connection hooked up and could read codes .. After that issue was resolved I found another power wire I could use that was laying down in my bundle , I hooked it up to distribute the electric load , all was fine until I went to shut it off and with the key off the engine stayed running :/ ... It was the fuel pump relay wires and one other keyed power bundle going into the Ls ecu , I separated them and now it’s functioning just fine ... I was in high hopes that I wouldn’t have to add an extra fuse block and relay but I think it’ll be my best bet for load and wiring longevity (I’d really hate to find out the hard that I’m pulling to many amps and burn stuff) .. I had found a hot lead in the abs plug and it has a nice heavy fuse in the engine bay fuse box so I ran a new lead off of that through the crossover loom which I could pull from it for a clean 12v supply , right now it’s going to waste just supplying the ecu with constant hot .. My ac system will be the next challenge , if I can change the ends on the tubes of the factory condenser and run the filter drier remotely it’ll make it pretty easy ...

Good grief mr picky pants !! We’ll see , I want a cage and rack setup again , I can’t help but miss all the stuff I was able to haul with the amigo , just a simple 20’ stick of steel tubing was a breeze .. My fords big but I’ve experienced having number stuck through the back window all the way up to the windshield and in my face haha , cornering was not fun !!
Trailers work but then you’re towing something around that doubles the complexity of a simple job ..

I’ll try to do some photo dumps , sadly I think uploading them here degrades the resolution and they don’t show very much ..

The motor doesn’t fit in the engine bay to bad at all , I was going to stretch the front end about 4”s but after looking and thinking it through the bumper would’ve been pushed out that much more and for climbing stuff it would defeat the purpose of a lift and bigger tires so plan (b)

Surprisingly the exhaust isn’t to loud which I’m happy about (I’ll try to link a video) I was going to keep the high flow cat but it’s missing part of the honeycomb and also adds more heat to the system so I left it out to see if the exhaust sound would change , didn’t seem to .. I’m thinking of using a simple inline radiator cap setup that will go in place of the pipe I’m using currently (perfect spot) , rather than try to cut up the upper section of the front core support and not have that be the highest point anyway (my hands and fingers will thank me for years to come not getting cut up either, not to mention how much fun it would be to try and add coolant in a less than accessible location)

I’ve been up and running for a couple weeks now , I switched the rear axle gears back to 4:10’s from the 4:88’s , it was mighty low for driving on the freeway as in 3500 at 70mph ish

22BFC2B4-D752-4B85-9FDE-2F26D01D0375.jpeg

I had to setup a speed sensor to help out with clutch in stalling , that means shifting down or coming to a stop always required blipping the throttle .. My makeshift sensor works for speeds above 5-10 mph which mades a big difference even though it’s not perfect ... I waited over a month for my speedo sensor to show up that I ordered from Dakota digital and sadly it only reads 1mph whereas my cheese mo setup reads out 10 mph regardless if I’m going faster or not but it’s enough to give feedback.. Anyway now I have to wait till Monday to call and gets some input as to what’s up..

I’m building or prepping to build a 14 bolt rear axle so in the end I won’t be sweating blowing up the 44 whenever I lay on the throttle , I’ve already heard a few metal pings when taking off hard (might just be a drivetrain slop) but it makes me worry about when and where I’ll actually bust something .. The 14 bolt came with 3:73’s but I think that’ll be a little to high for my low range crawling (we'll see and why I wanted to swap in the 4:10’s) it will also be getting the 35”s from my buggy for the time being which will also change the rpm curve a bit ..

As of now the 14 bolt is trimmed up and marked for the pieces needed to go on , I’m pondering over locker choices , weld it, another lunch box style , spool, not really an air locker because of price and I don’t really like open diff for standard driving anyway .. This motor has some crazy hp and the cam I had made turns on strong at 3500 rpm area yet cruises nice below , it’s like the best of both words and no disappointments ...

After getting the Ls semi dialed in I got to work on the 1 ton upgrade before I blew something up  that was a fun project !! I upgraded to 35”s at the same time which helped out with cruising Rpms (still gets poopy mileage in the realm of 12.5)

Brad, Those 35's look good. How much lift to fit them or did you already have the room. And your son looks at ease behind the wheel.
1990 Amigo, 2.3 5 speed (sold)
1991 Pick up (long gone)
2000 Amigo, 2.2 5 speed(sold)
1985 Trooper 1.9 4 speed (sent back to KS)
1989 Trooper RS 2.6 5 spd. Red

We get too soon old and too late smart!

Nice to hear from you !!
When I put the 14 bolt in I pre-adjusted the spring perches to level it out (roughly 2”s) I also put in one of the factory gov lock third but didn’t realize it was damaged (Missing a friction and steel plate) so it acted like an open diff .. It’s not a serviceable setup so I added yet more shims to the mix and now it’s way better .. Lift is like 7-8”s suspension , luckily the fronts adjustable via the air bags but besides that the 35”s fit nicely ... My son came to the realization that driving is much harder than he thought  It was a great experience though , we drove by some people in a little car (guy looked up at Sky driving and his eyes about popped out of his head) ..
