Allante

I'm thinking of picking up a Cadillac Allante...which was built from 1987-1993. Little over 21,000 were produced. I'm been looking at a '87, and the last year..1993...which came with the cadillac Northstar....the bodies were designed in Turin, and then shipped to Detroit, via 747..and then assembled at the cadillac plant...basic list price, before added options, was around $ 55,000....it was a fairly unique car for GM.

Very unique car, very appealing. Have always liked them.

I took a hard look at them a few years back when daydreaming about the "extra" convertible/toy car candidate. This ranks highly. Great styling, has held up better than almost anything from those years, TBH. Only quibble I had was the cockpit/cluster was very parts-bin GM, and the factory wheels were old-school Cadillac when this called for something more Euro. I recall seeing them tooling around Tampa/Clearwater when I was a kid and they were respected.

30 years later and they still look good so we know they pass the test of time. If you're a GM guy and these scratch your tickle, oh yes get it. Personally in this category my fave is the 97-2003 XK8, which can be had amazingly cheap for pristine examples. It's not as unique as the Allante and it's not American if that's a priority. Somewhere in my car brain and GM youth, there's a deep affection for the Allante so I for one say go for it if you really want it. I understand with the Allante the digital dash can be a headache so an analog one might be a bonus if it comes down to different examples/candidates. Cadillac has gone way up IMO in the last years with the ATS, CTS, etc. It's so much cooler now to think about them now that they are really top-flight again.

There was a guy in my neighborhood a few years ago who had SEVERAL of them. He had done something with the airlines and made good money, and he liked cars. They had a house with a 12 car garage. It was 3 - 2car garage doors, and each bay was 2 vehicles deep. The very last bay had some kind of enclosure. The day I met him, he had a red Allante convertible in the driveway, a 1940 Ford in one of the bays, but they were in the process of moving to "the country", so most of his toys were elsewhere. Yes, they always appealed to me as well. Dennis

I worked at a Chevy/Cadillac dealership and the owner (who owned another few dealerships) only owned a single vehicle, and it was a Cadillac Allante.

Pretty sure Buster28 has an Allante, or at least had one at one time. Give him a PM. Funny, just yesterday day I was watching Motor Trend where the guy who happened to be a walking encyclopedia on caddys was walking around a junkyard near Palmdale CA. with nothing there but caddies, among them, several Allantes, giving the history of each one. I never knew caddy had a 472 cu. in one of there cars years back that produced 500 ft. lbs. torque.

I still own the Allante, it has about 11600 miles on clock. Had to replace the injectors about 4 years ago, the ethanol in the gas destroyed the injector coil insulation. Found some ethanol proof ones at AllanteSource.com

That's neat. Thanks for sharing. Great color combo, condition.

I'm going to pay more attention to these. There's a cheap one locally on CL; low 100s mi but says slipping transmission, a few things cosmetically that could be dealt with easily... Hmm.... ;)

The Allante BOSCH III brake system is scary and expensive to repair
https://thrownwrench.com/troubleshootin ... bs-system/
The scary part is the brakes are operated by a high pressure hydraulic pump and if it fails the backup is is a pressurized accumulator that is good for about two stops. The brake fluid needs frequent changing to ensure there is no water in the system. The system operates at 3000psi so make sure the pressure is bled off before working on the brake system.
Body electrical parts can be hard to find.

A Pininfarina roadster body with a Ferrari engine is worth a ton of money. Put a reliable Cadillac engine in it and not worth much at all, makes no sense.

Nice, had a 2003 for 10 years that I sold a few years ago. Regret it every nice day when I could be out cruising. Always curious Buster as to what engine is in your Allante

And here's a Nash Healy with the Pininfarina body for sale on CL for 75,000. Go figure. See the posting in my unusual cars post here.

My Allante is a 1991, it has a 4.5L tuned port V8.
In 93, which was the last Allante year, a 4.6L Northstar V8 was used. Imho the 4.5L was more reliable due to the Northstar head gasket problem.
By 2000 the head gasket issue was resolved (more or less), here is a pic of my 2000 Eldorado Touring Coupe with a 300hp Northstar V8. As of this month it has 18,360 miles on it and the original head gasket. Btw there are no V12 Northstar engines.
The Eldorado Touring Coupe is a much better driving car than the Allante.

I used to live in Pompano Beach Fl and a former neighbor of mine had an Allante. He died and his widow had called me because she knew I was a "car guy". She had a "locksmith" come out because she couldn't find the keys to the Allante and he butchered it. I'm in TN and couldn't physically help, but I did some googling and found Allante source. She called them and asked if she had it towed there if they would fix it for her. The owner of the Allante Source drove to her house, an hour one way, and personally fixed the ignition and made a second trip to replace a few small missing items. He didn't charge her a dime.

I just sent an email to Dick at AllanteSource, inquiring to see if the fuel pump can be started using the ALDL connector. On the Eldorado I modified a Fuel Pump relay so the pump will start when I turn on the ignition. I remove the schrader valve from the fuel rail, attach a hose, insert the special relay and pump ethanol contaminated fuel out of the tank for the winter. The Allante fuel pump relay is too hard to get to, hope there is an ALDL solution.
