My barber's Corvair pickup.

Postby Von » Thu Nov 07, 2019 2:38 pm

Just got a haircut (#2 with a fade, short on top) and saw he's making some progress. He painted it, not sure what else he has to do.
Looks good.

9' bed!?

I had one of those for a few hours. Paid $3.00 for it (yes, THREE DOLLARS). Was sitting in a guys driveway with engine out and bed full of junk. I asked and he said he needed a couple of quarts of ATF for his other car, so I gave him 3 bucks and we trailered it off. Unfortunately, when we started clearing stuff out of the bed, we found the back of the cab had been cut straight down from each side of the window to make a door into the bed (the junk in the back was the remains of a plywood camper body that had been mounted to it. Decided it wasn't worth saving. Pulled the speedo cable from the tranny for my van, and never even took it off the trailer. It got metal junk loaded in the back and went off to the scrappers the next day. Dennis

that corvan, looks nice....looks like a 3 speed...probably the 95 hp beast......at least it wasn't that dog arse automatic....

they were few in the day,,,now eons later, they are very rare...especially if the beds, etc is rust free.....many of 'em suffered from severe rust..

I once saw one in Nashville, a few years ago....the trans was upgraded to a 4 sp, and the engine was from a '65...140hp ..and it drove nice...and sounded great

Yeah, I drove a Corvair 95 pickup with an automatic one time. booooooorrrrrriiiing. Had a Corvair 95 van with the automatic for a short while after the 4 speed transaxle in my Greenbrier went bad. Was decent transportation, but boring like the pickup. Because of the 2 speed powerslide tranny, it was LOUD inside. Sounded like it may as well have had a centrifugal clutch like a big minibike. I about broke my left ankle with that thing. After having the 4 speed Greenbrier for a while and then going to the auto van, I had developed the habit of jumping in and stabbing the clutch as I twisted the key - except there was no clutch!!!!!!!
FWIW: The term (model) Corvair 95 was because it had a 95" wheel base. "Greenbrier" was the name that GM gave the Corvair window vans. Most of the vans and ALL of the pickups (pickups made only in '62 and '63 IIRC) came with the smaller engines that were 80 or 102 HP (145 cubic inches). In 1964, GM increased the size of the engine to 164 CID and the base was then 95 HP, 110 HP with the Monzas or "power option". For 1964 there was the turbo charged "Monza Spyder" with 150 HP (This was also available in 62 and 63, and the turbo HP remained 150 even with the smaller 145 CID engines). 1965 was the last year vans were offered, and a 140HP - 4 carb engine was offered (Corsa model or performance option package) and a 180 HP turbo with a larger blower.
Corsa model and turbos were not offered after 1966 (thank you Nader), but the 140HP 4 carb was available as a dealer installed option.
BTW: I went from the automatic Corvair 95 van to a '65 Chevelle Malibu, that I dropped a '66 396 into. No more boredom, but no more fuel economy either. Dennis

EDIT: I was wrong. Pickups were from '61 to '64 and DID have the 164 CID engines in 1964, although few were sold that year.
