I just had to take my tranny in to fix a broken shift fork and I'm now experiencing a whining as well. Haven't had the time to check on it. My spring break starts Wednesday, so hopefully I'll be able to give my Trooper the attention it needs.
I havent yet, but i will soon as i get the head back on and hoping it will work right, the gasket went out on it. Its parked right now and the motor is in pieces.
I was told that 4th gear is the only gear that is straight through. That makes sense to me because 4th gear is 1:1. All of the other gears go through one side shaft or another. So the side shaft(s) in yours have bearings that make noise. Try changing the fluid (using regular motor oil, NOT gear lube) and see if it quietens it down.
