That is one sweet Trooper!
Thanks, she is a work in progress, but soon it should be a pretty solid truck. Just need to replace a few more seals and give the fuel system a once over.

New paint.this is an aussie 2.8 turbo diesel .with mildly tweaked fuel pump.somewhere aroud 140 hp .running standard boost 10 pounds.Found it sitting at a friends factory, paid 700 for it, new clutch and filters and it was ready to roll.
Cheers, zacco far north queensland, australia

Man!!...thats a bad to da bone ride!!!...and a killer deal too!!...can we get an under the hood shot?

Sun2moon, I had 2 of these diesels before, body rusted out so sold for parts. No rust in this one.Tows my 3000 pound boatat 23.4 miles per us gallon. No electronics (mechanical injection) and no timing belts, all gear driven valvetrain, also emp proof lol

Correction,21 mpg (us) towing, approx 50 ,60 mph. These thing have torque to burn when tweaked, boost starts 5lbs at 1700 rpm, 10 lbs at 2400 rpm engine is isuzu direct injection4jb1T

Wow man... thats a cool truck, diesels are over my head, never had one, or worked on one...lol...but dam , thinking I'd like one of these...especially right hand drive!!! Enjoy it bud and thanks for sharing!!..Tommy

Replaced:
Radiator and cap
Water pump
Thermostat
Timing belt
Alternator/fan belt
Alternator brackets with used one I modified and strengthened.
Fan clutch.

It started up and ran fine with no further adjustments necessary though by today it seems I've developed a misfire? It clicks when it misses. I would suspect a plug wire though my looming is anal. I use a bunch of zip ties and no wire touches metal or another wire. Anyway the cooling system is now stable as heck.

Wasn't the water pump loads of fun? (Getting the old gasket material off)
My friend (was a ford line mechanic) said use the paper gasket OR rtv but not both. I said I'm the one who has to do the job again if it leaks so how bout the paper gasket with a thin layer of rtv on both sides of it. (Why would you not use both... the gasket compensates for imperfections between the surfaces, the rtv is a sealant. 2 separate and necessary functions)
I won. He was impressed when I made my own thermostat gasket with a sharpened compass (makes perfect circles any size you like) and a punch.
The timing belt turned out to be not hard at all though the lower cover is a bit warped.
Upon starting you could hear a weird noise which I figure was the belt rubbing on the cover. In a few miles one of them vacated the space wanted by the other.
I did the fan clutch... I think a lot of owners are running around with compromised fan clutches and dont realize it. Mine seemed to work okay... Roll up a light magazine or newspaper and when it's good and hot shove it into the blades while running. (This is by no means dangerous unless you are completely stupid and a little girl)
It should not stop the fan and should shred your test paper pretty quick. Mine started to shred it but quickly came to a stop at which point you could hold the fan when the engine ran with almost no resistance.
A tell tale sign is gooey black mung on the fan blades. That is silicone which leaks from the body as they go bad. These do frequently fail and are considered an expirable part like a belt.

On the water pump gasket I just use a RTV or some permatex on the pump side of the gasket. Unless it is someplace that can easily be gotten to. I have gotten a bit leery of silicon stuff. It moves and can make little blobs of stuff internally when you tighten it so a very thin film. Do not need much unless one is making a whole gasket. And that is an art I do not to try. Just keep some sheets of gasket material around. For the really thin ones I have used newspaper and a bit thicker I have used cereal boxes. It is 15 miles to town 25 miles to nearest opened place if it is sunday.

Phone book covers make good gaskets too.. Though I wouldn't want to make that water pump gasket.
For the thermostat I used some stuff they had at O'Reillys that was a cellulose and rubber compound.
For coolant I used distilled straight water and a bottle of that hyper lube super coolant. Prevents corrosion, dont know if it really runs cooler or not. Don't need antifreeze in the coastal region of San Diego, might see 36 degrees a couple nights a year.
