Found a 96 Trooper LS at the yard yesterday, & am wondering 1) is my '02 S w/ single-speed intermittent pre-wired or plugged to accept a variable-speed intermittent, & 2) if it is, will the thing come off w/o a steering wheel puller?

Probably is. My 89 short wring harness coming off the wiper switch had the same harness / connector as the intermittent switch. Remove one and plug in the other. Sometimes, when you get the nut removed from the steering wheel, you can smack it with a hammer / socket and hammer, etc and the wheel will pop free.

Much obliged Sir! But how to get at the nut?

There should be a pad, horn button, airbag, etc which needs to be removed first. After reading your post, are you sure those 2 year models are compatible for the exchange of parts?

I do think they'll interchange, since it's the same steering setup, but I couldn't figure how to get the pad/horn/airbag off to get to the nut.
