Hey guys. What's the proper oil for the TOD transfer case?

I see lots of reference to 5W30 motor oil for transfer case but when looking at my TOD case on the housing near the fill plug it says ATF Dex II or III.

I'm planing on using Dexron III but want to make sure I'm refilling with the correct stuff.

Thanks.

Should have mentioned. I do have the manual and checked but still a bit confused (doesn't take much).

Now I have an '01 Trooper S Auto with TOD

Page 8-19 of the '01 manual states (item8) Dex III for the trans, then it goes on to say that (item 9) Transfer cased 4WD is SAE 5W30SF and then (item 10) TOD System is Dexron IIE or Dexron III.

Now where I'm confued is that they say 'TOD system'. To me the TOD system is the transfer case (but I could be wrong). Also the T-case has case in the housing near the fill plug Dex II or Dex III.

So the TOD on a TOD vehicle is the transfer case -- correct? The manual is confusing. If I wrote the manual I would say Transfer case without TOD gets xxx and with TOD gets yyy.

Anyway just want to get it right. Looks like Dex III is what I need. Can anyone enlighten me? Thanks guys (gals).

TOD USES DEX III IT IS BASICALLY A CLUTCH SETUP INSIDE SIMILIAR TO AN AUTOMATIC, ONLY THE MANUAL T/C USES THE 5/30

The manual is confusing about this, I remember when I bought my old 99 Trooper having the same confusion. The TOD unit is the transfer case for the auto tranny models, and uses ATF. The manual tranny model transfer cases use motor oil.

Whomever wrote the TOD stuff in the was a lousy writer. Even the 'how TOD works' section of the manual is confusing.

Dex III is the stuff for the TOD case. Just about 2 quarts to refill after a drain (I think I was actually just over 2 qts but I let it drain for a while while I did other stuff).

I actually like my Rodeos manual. No joke. It's simple and clear. Like you can look on the back cover and it says all the fluid types it takes, tire PSI and size.

In my Suzuki manual for my bike.. jesus.. I was looking for the brake fluid type for 10 mins. Finally in the most inconvenient place I found it. On the brake page I would expect it to say something maybe like "Brake fluid type: DOT 4", however it has pictures and all these other things in bolt prints that take up 90% of the page, and in the corner it says "Warning: be sure to use DOT 4 type fluid only". lol

John,

I really don't know for sure. I've done so much to my truck in the two months that I've owned it maintenance-wise.

I think I first noticed the different behavior after I put the 275-75/16 tires and after changing the TOD fluid but I'm not sure if either of these had anything to do with it.

The transfer case fluid (Dex III) was brown when it came out (definitely needed a change) but wasn't burned or anything.

I finished up the cross member install and put some new O2's in it today. I went out for a two hour ride running errand.

Truck is running fine. I still have an EVAP leak to chase down and my TOD is doing some strange stuff with the lights on the dash. It engages and disengages and seems to be working but it is acting weird. I can take some notes and let you know what it is doing if you want to compare notes.

In 2WD everything is 'normal'.

Well, I may change the xfer case oil at some point, but it's not high on the list for me right now; my TOD's stable, I'm just not convinced it's normal for those first 1/3 front wheel indicators to stay on when nothing's slipping. But like I said I'm not going to worry too much about it at this point.

I'll do brakes first (got some of the Hawk pads in transit, BTW) and then timing belt and H2O pump  and then probably suspension. I do want to hear about any new developments with your TOD issue, though.

Glad yours is running good. Mine is too. I thought I had my evap code fixed when I found an evap hose that I hadn't reattached good after doing the IMG. I reset the CEL and it stayed off for a hundred miles or so, then came back on. Reset it again yesterday and it hasn't come back on yet. If it does I'll try a gas cap next.
