Howdy Folks. This has nothing to do with cars. I just wanted to say that Black Labs are the best dogs. I have 2 black labs and I love them to death. My boy stole my burrito off the kitchen counter tonight and immediately dropped it because it was too hot for him to eat. Then picked it up again, and dropped it, and picked it up again and dropped it.... all the way out the door (me running and cursing at him). He came back after about 5 minutes feeling guilty with his head down, burrito in one piece (sort of) in his mouth. So I let it cool down then told him he could have it. What are you going to do? He's still the best hunting dog I've ever had.

Labs are cool and all.....but my mixed breed "Sam" is the ultimate security dog. He's a Rottie / Sheppard Mix with the biggest pointy ears you have ever seen! We almost named him radar when his ears started to stand up as a puppy  Hes about 100lbs and has already bit the mail man once (2 years ago), hes very protective. We got him from our negibors vet about 5 years ago, the vets brother owns a pawn shop. Vets brother said some guy came in to his pawn shop with him one day. The guy "pawninig" a puppy said if he didnt buy him they were going to use him as bait in dog fights, so the guy gave him to his vet brother to put up for adoption. When I saw him at the vets office I had to take him with me. He isnt a fan of burritos, although he stole my T-Bone off of the stovetop one nite. My other dog (sams compadre) Sophie is a Siberian Husky, they get along together great. Sophie was born with a "cute" gene, she is the best beggar EVAR! She will lay her had on your leg while you are at the dinner table and stare up at you with this pricless look untill she gets some scraps, I'm guilty of spoiling both of them  but we dont have kids so who cares if I spoil my hounds! My trooper is really sams truck anyhow. Most of the time the interior is covered in dog hair, as this is thier ride to the P. A. R. K.

I used to own a black lab back home but had to give him to the RSPCA when I moved out here. I now have an Australian sheppard/border collie mix. Sheena. She's a nut. I love her to death but she does push her luck with certain things.

She has a link to her site on here somewhere.
Also owned a 09% timber wolf called wolf. He was cool as all hell.

Weimaraners are the best dogs, but few owners can accept having a dog that can outsmart them. Labs are a good runner up.

Caucasian shephards  (if you are ok with a dog the size & weight of a black bear) and smart as hell.

For my money (and a LOT of it has "gone to the dogs") Australian Shepherds are the best. Just about as bright as a border collie, but not quite so busy (and no tails to get slammed in the car door). My ex-wife shows them, so I was used to having about +/- 6 around the house at any give time!

I like them so much, I still get to babysit some of them on the wekends! Much better now that I'm not paying the vet bills...

Howdy folks. Seems everyone has their picks for "best dog". I like all dogs. Black Labs are still the best.

My brother has been bugging me to get a Great Dane. So I thought I'd ask the nice folks on the Planet if anyone has had a Great Dane or knows anything about them.

I'm also interested in Bull Mastiffs if anyone has any thoughts on these dogs too.

Take care guys.

Not to offend anyone on the board, but being raised sorounded by dogs all my life & owning both (GD & BM) i can say this, both of them are dumb as hell. I'm talking from personal experience here & not only with my dogs, but being a member of a feiw clubs (in my country every dog "make" & "model" had it's own club) every single GD or BM i have ever seen was REALY dumb (to say the least).
Sure they are great protectors, are very freindly, very dedicated to the owner, but are dumb.

Howdy. Thanks for the reply Rubo. I have heard GD and BM are both kinda dumb. I probably would not go for a full bread dog anyway as I generally don't like breeders and full bread dogs have too many imbreeding problems. I'm particularly fond of shepard mixes because shepards are smart and loyal. I don't like full shepards because their fur is too long and I like short haired animals. Anyway, I would rather have a friendly dog than a mean one, no matter how smart they might be. I hate going over to someones house and their dog is constantly trying to establish dominance over you. I don't have any kids, but most of my friends do, and I want a dog that is good with children too. Rubo, I don't know anything about caucasian shepards. Do you have pictures? How big are these dogs exactly? I like big dogs, but 100 lbs is about my max.

Sorry no pics, but i'll try to find some on the web & if i do i;ll post them.
If 100 pounds is your max, than forget about them. The smallest i ever saw was around 170. They average at 200 & i've seen couple that were 300.

They realy are THAT big, you see the wolfs in the parts where i grew up weight around 150-200 pounds & in order to prodect the farms & the owners you need a dog that would be able to fight one or two of those beast at a time. I've heard of these dogs going against a grizly (sp?) & winning.

But at the same time they are increadibly friendly with kids, you could leave your 5 year old with them in a forrest knowing it will be safe untill you get back (not saying it's a good thing to leave a child alone, but in an emergency, you know what i mean).

well our old dog(Kelly) is a chocolate lab mix. Vary nice dog, and if anything aproches the gates she barks her head off so we know if something is coming. But now shes getting perty old (turning 13 this year) and is var slow, and on her last vet visit was diagnosed whith kidney failure  > might have to put her down if it gets too bad
there was another dog we had recently, one was a pure bread male German Shepard. Vary cool dog, a bit agresive sometimes but a good dog. We had a big problem keeping him in the yard. We tred chaining him up and he broke his collar. then to keep him in line untill we thought of something else we chained a wheel to him. He jumped the fence but the hweel sloed him down enough so we could cacth him  . Then we got one of the electric fence things, that lasted for about a week. Then he found out how to take off the collor and was gone
