If it is wired anything like the 2.6l 1st gens, check the alternator. In the 2.6 setup, the alternator energizes the "engine relay" which in turn powers the fuel pump. If the alternator isn't working, the key in the start position powers the fuel pump long enough to build up enough pressure for the engine to run for only a few seconds.
Beyond that, check the obvious: fuel filter, fuel quality, etc.
