So,

My 96 3.2 likes to eat up alt belts.

If I dont make it real tight the belt slips when cold. So i make it nice and tight.

Every few months ill be driving and the battery light comes on. I check and pieces od the alt belt are everywhere. Last two were gatorbacks (look good enough).

Am I doing something stupid?

Is this the original alternator?
If not did it do this with the old one?
Have you checked to see that the alternator pulley isn't damaged?

try a different brand of belt, but check out the pulleys also. make sure everything is spinning straight. is any oil getting on the belt from a leak somewhere?

That sounds like something isn't aligned right, or that the pulley is damaged. Next time you put on a belt, look at the alternator. See if it isn't in crooked. Also look for burrs on the pulley.

Been out of town on business.

I believe it is the orig alternator, I have never replaced it. Next time it gets eaten I will inspect the pulley closer.
