i have a 1992 isuzu rodeo with a 2.6 and 5 spd., it fires up but only for 1-4 seconds and dies. got to pump the pedal just to get it started. any ideas on what i can check

Jumper the fuel pump relay. (Do a search on it here and you'll find plenty of advice and pics.)

Pumping the pedal does almost nothing. It doesn't give it any more gas. It just allows more air in, when the pedal is down.

Sounds like the fuel pump is burned out or the altenator is not sending the fuel pump power. Have someone crank it over while you crawl under the rear to listen for the fuel pump. If you hear the pump for the first second or two then nothing your problem is most likely the altenator. Go do that and get back to the board with the results.
