Regearing: lower (i think)?

Just wondering, but has anybody regeared to a (lower?) gear like 3.xx. Everyone wants to go (higher?) 4.77 for example, for crawling i assume? But i would like to not be pushing 2500rpm to do 30mph. has anybody done this?

IF you can find them, I THINK you can get 4.10's for these axles. These beasties were really meant for a load & a back country two-track.

The other option is go trade your new shoes for some 31x10.50x15's (or find some 16" alloys & get 215/85/16 or 235/85/16) & a ratio adapter box for your speedo cable (this by the way is WAY less difficult lol). The taller tire will give you the same 'power sapping' feel & lower your cruising RPM's the same way a gear job would.

2500 RPM at 35 mph??? WTF??

I regularly commute 40+ miles each day to work..

Granted, I only drive my Trooper 1/3 of the time to work, thats still at least twice a week at an 80+ mile round trip, usually around 70+ mph the entire time...

I never break 2800-3k rpm, and thats at 75mph.. And thats on a 23 year old truck, with over 223k miles... 2.6 4 banger here, fuel injected, 5 speed, tuned WELL....

What are you running to get those #'s?

gearing is kind of *** backwards, 4.77's are lower than 3.83's, higher the number, the lower the gear ratio is.
In all likeness, your trooper probably has 4.56's
there are 4.10's out there, I believe a 2wd 90-94 Amigo has them, and I think alot of the newer stuff would have the front, remember that these 3rd members are removable, which makes this easy.

Even when i try to drive gentle, it shifts at about 2k rpm. If gotten in up to about 5k just trying to merge
4.10 or 4.30 ratios are the only higher speed gears available for both differentials. You can accomplish the same thing by using tires with a larger diameter, about 6% larger than you have now for the 4.30's, 12% for the 4.10's (example: 31" tire, 4.56 ratio rpm= 28" tire, 4.10 ratio rpm).
Borrow a couple of larger diameter tires & wheels, go for a test drive- or several with different tire sizes. You can fine-tune until you find your best tire size, then buy a new set that size. You can get the proper tooth speedo cable drive gear to correct the speedo reading from jlemond for about $30.
i asked Jerry one time about putting 4.11s in a trooper for a diesel and he said it can be done, but depending on the year model theres some veryashon as to where you get the gears from.

4.10 GEARS FORM THE FRT OF THE LATE RODEO DIFF YEARS HAD THEM DEPENDIGN ON THE TIRES SIZE
I wish we were not so far away and I would trade you my 4.10's for your 4.56 or whatever you have
