My Trooper was bought off the new car lot in July 1991 by a couple in Tempe, Arizona. I bought it from them in August 2005 with 187,658 miles on it for $3,650. It was stolen in 2015 and then found by police in 2018. The thieves broke it and just left it. It has been sitting here broken ever since. Now, I'm about to work on it. It currently has 190,248 miles on it.

This car was stolen and then found by police three years later. It was clean and everything working before it was stolen, but it was returned filthy, dusty, and with a destroyed column switch, bad power steering pump and either a broken fuel filler hose or a crack in the gas tank. (sigh)

Well, you've found the right place to help you get your poor, abused Trooper restored to its former glory!

There are a number of Trooper Dudes here who have parts rigs, and are selling those parts off 'em. You might be able to find a complete steering column, or if it's just the locking assy that's busted, a replacement for just those parts.

PS pump is just a matter of finding one & installing, and the fuel leak, well I'd say more likely to be a cracked/leaking hose on a 34-year-old rig.

At any rate, these don't sound like insurmountable problems. Just attack them systematically and you'll get there eventually. The other issue is, it's been sitting for a long time. You'll need to replace hoses, flush the cooling system, do basic maint, etc etc. Drain all the fuel out of the gas tank, flush the lines, bla bla bla. Fun Stuff, eh!

Post a pic or three when you get a chance, and don't hesitate to post questions, we're here to help! Let us know what engine and transmission you have, as well, it'll help with any troubleshooting.

Also, check the shop manuals' "Mega Thread" and download info for your rig. The '88 shop manual is posted (useful for '88 thru '91 models), along with the V6 supplement if you have a 2.8. Plus an Electrical Troubleshooting manual which you may find useful. You'll find those and more here:
