I would also go 2.6.

If the 1.9 uses the same tranny and intake as the 2.3, it is really pretty straight forward.

There are several pretty detailed posts on how to make that happen. I did mine about a year ago and this site and a Haynes manual got me through it!

You could go to a 2.6L about as easy as the 2.3L, but you'd need a 2.3L carb and intake, maybe a few other little bits and pieces like flywheel and clutch parts.
