Is it just me, or does the oil filter in the 2nd gen Trooper (3.5) seem SMALL? I got the size recomended, but it's not even as large as the flange. Anyone running a larger oil filter on these? If so what size? Is there a reason to change, or am I just being dumb? The filter on my Mazda 3lt is like TWICE the size!

Thanks for any input.

P.S. I've been reading the posts for a while....don't want a BRAND recomendation....just a SIZE..... don't want to start that thread again! LOL

Been using the standard sized filter on my Rodeo's engine for the last 191k miles, no harm has come from it. Just use a good filter, change the oil when you should, and you'll be fine.

There's not always a *need* for a bigger filter, not when you have a sump the size of nearly 6qts for a V6 engine...that alone is very sufficient!

Other V6 engine's sit at 3.5-5qts; so our's are pretty good sized.

My Tacoma's 3.4L V6 oil filter is about the same size, perhaps a tad longer, but a tad skinnier too.

Its always better to have a larger filter. But I agree you don't always "need" one. What you will gain from a larger filter is more filtration surface area and more flow. And if you run synthetic oil on an extended drain interval a larger filter will last several thousand more miles without a change than a small one. Personally I run a remote setup with a Delco PF2 filter which holds 1qt of oil.
