Wheel Play:
I'm not sure if it's back and forth slack, but I've seen other vehicles have that issue when the front wheel hubs need to be repacked. And I think there's a mention of it somewhere on this site stating the same. Occasionally, if the front wheel bearings were not seated/tightened properly, it can cause play to the front.
Clunk Noise:
This one can be caused by several things. Sounds like you've already checked the items I was going to mention. My '99 Trooper actually has a slight clunk of it's own I can't seem to disagnose. The problem mostly occurs on inclines. On some vehicles it can be traced to bushings/leaf spring issues, but most likely not the problem on ours.
But who knows.
If anyone else reads this and has some input, it would be appreciated.
Thanks
