Just recently acquired this `88 trooper from a salvage yard. Perfect interior, straight as an arrow body w/no rust, clear coat gone but the prob is it obviously sat awhile before being hauled away. Replaced the fuel pump (reason for being junked) and started her up. Great oil pressure but there is a ticking that sounds almost like an exhaust leak. The engine has a slight miss to it. Could it be an injector sticking? I`m new to the world of fuel injection. Gimme a carb. Got other questions but one thing at the time. :)

My bet is that the valves need to be adjusted. The procedure isn't hard at all. As I recall all you need is a screwdriver, socket set, feeler gauge, and about 2 hours (for the first time).

We have an article about it at:

Wow! Great get....and

WELCOME TO THE BOARD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yep, as I understand it, the 2.6 motors 'require' periodic valve lash adjustment, don't know the frequency of adjustment though.

The '88s are the first year ISUZU went to the heavier duty drive train, so you got a great find.

Good Luck, keep 'em running.

8) Thanks for all the info guys. Checked out the ticking, turns out to be an exhaust you know what. Will do the valve lash thing after I drive her some more. I`m thinking the troop sat for a few years before I found it. Did I mention that I only gave $350 for it? Please don`t call the cops!

Mileage ain`t too bad either. I drove it to work ( 60 mi round trip ) and it`s right at 16 mpg with the tires off the Raider. No complaints.

Since I`m new to the trooper, what do you mean by `88 was the 1st for heavier duty? Towing comp.? Stiffer susp.? Hook me up with some info to keep it strong and/or make it better.
