Hey Hive,

I rebuilt my 1990 4ZE1 4-cylinder and the gasket between the block and the "middle oil pan" (can't see to find the actual name in my manuals) was funky. Very thick (3 mm or so) and when I tightened the bolts, it merely squished out. I back them off but the bolts at the rear needed to be cranked down in order to align the transmission bell bolts.

Go forward ~1,000 miles, engine is great than whammy, the gasket squeezes out like a hernia. I know I need to pull the engine again and re-do the gasket but what am I doing wrong? Are there spacers around the bolts? Is the real gasket much thinner? How do you keep the gasket from squishing out?

Any advice from other engine builders would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Just to be clear, I have read the board (great stuff!) and see that most folks use just RTV gasket sealer and no paper/rubber gaskets. Others use the Fel Pro or similar. I wanted to hear from folks who have done this recently and what works or didn't work. Thank you.
