Are the 5 speed transmissions interchangeable between Isuzu and GM engines?

Whatever.

I believe there's a version of the MUA-5 with a bell housing specifically for GM. That's the one you would have, and would need. But maybe I don't understand the question.
The MUA5 you need for any GM 60 degree V-6 has to come from another 1989-1991 V-6 Trooper or a 1991-1992 V-6 Rodeo*, or one of the rare V-6 pickups*. This is NOT a GM transmission (probably confused with the GM 4L30E automatic trans). I don't know of any GM manual transmission that fits Isuzus.
Some 2.6 MUA5s that can work by swapping parts, but that becomes "involved"
* using a transmission from a Rodeo or pickup requires removing the remote shifter box (3 bolts) and installing the shift lever where the box went. Dennis
Dennis, that's better than I was able to offer.

Isn't it true that you could use any Isuzu MUA-5 transmission, provided you re-use the existing GM bell housing (front case half) on the donor transmission?

That is correct. However there are output shaft variations too.
The 4 cyl trans has a larger-diameter input shaft. Jerry Lemond said you could take a V6 pilot bushing and have the i.d. machined to fit the 4 cyl input shaft.

The V-6 input shaft is also a little longer, about 3/8" I think. Input shaft will bottom out against the crank and won't let the bellhousing mate up against the block if it's not cut off. Don't ask me how I know......

And THAT'S why I said it was "involved". Dennis
Longer input shaft would impact a 4 cyl trans fitted with a V6 case, and the only other issue would be the pilot bushing i.d., AFAIK.

The other way (V6 trans fitted with a 4 cyl case) should be OK long as there's enough of the shorter input shaft into the 4 cyl pilot bearing.
