Are you certain it was just the turbo that was removed? I would be very surprised if it's not an entire engine swap. Those turbos usually outlasted the engines they were installed on.

If you determine that the entire engine was swapped, you'd probably be better off looking for a 4JB1-T (2.8L) or 4JG2-T (3.1L). They were never offered in the US, but they're easier to find than running C223-T engines.

Can you post a couple of pics of the engine bay?

the C223 really isnt a great highway engine, you have to keep the RPMs down or risk throwing a rod.

I am certain they removed the turbo. The old owner did that because he was afraid of it throwing a rod. 4JB1-T (2.8L) or 4JG2-T (3.1L) are engines I would consider, but I've seen mixed feedback on how they well they would work with the existing transmission, that the increased power could break transmission parts.

Wow, he could have just loosened the throttle cable a bit.

You're right to be concerned about the MSG-5 transmission behind a 4J engine. But about 100% of those 4J engines come with MUA-5 transmissions attached, except for the ones with automatics.

the 10 bolt seems to hold up fine with the stock 4j power as well

Dumb question: Is the bellhousing bolt pattern of the 4J engine the same as the C223? The starter is on the left side on the 4J MUA5 and on the right (driver's) side on the gas MUA5 . What side is the starter on a C223?

The C223 has its starter on the left side (driver's side in the US), as do the 4J engines. I believe the bell housing bolt pattern is the same, but not positive. The reason not to use the MSG-5 behind a 4J engine is not due to the bolt pattern, but that it would not hold up well.

No, the MSG will not work behind the 4j series. It takes the MUA transmission, different bolt patterns and starter is on the opposite side. I have complete 4jb1t engines in stock, with the manual 5 speed 4wd transmission if you decide to go that route. Definitely better for highway RPMs and the power increase is notable.

I believe that the diesel MSG fits the 4J series.

Its been almost 15 years since i pulled the c223t and manual transmission out of my trooper, and sold the engine and trans to a fellow diesel pup enthusiast. I had pictures documenting that whole time but i would have trouble finding those pictures as the old photo hosting sites stopped working. I had the diesel MSG trans next to the diesel MUA in a photo and they were different is how I remember it anyway.

Perhaps they would bolt together, but again, the starter is on the opposite side at the very least. And the bellhousing is larger, as it makes installation in to the earlier first gens very difficult as it is a larger transmission over all.

I noticed that a newer member is selling a front case/bell housing for the c223t. I have 3 diesel MUA transmissions sitting in my shop right now, ill contact them and see if we can get some measurements and do a comparison.

Years back there was talk of ordering just the front case to swap onto a gas MUA trans to adapt to the 4jb1t but it was easier to just source engines with transmissions.

And once again, I may be wrong, but from my knowledge the starter on the C223 is on the same side as the 4J’s. Not saying it’s a good idea by any means, but as far as I know the bellhousing pattern is tbe same.

Jerry (JLEMOND) has said the same thing. The MSG-5 will fit the 4J engines, but it is not strong enough.
