What is this part with wire attaced for? What is called?

I have a 1988 trooper with the upper intake manifold from a later year..not sure which year. I purchased the i-tec manifold but it seems the port is blocked off.

Does the original 88 set up need it?

That's the EGR temp probe. Only used on CA emission vehicles.

So... i tried to remove the plug where i thought the EGR temp probe would go and ended up stripping the thread in that hole..(the hole on top of pic).

Which hole should that temp probe go to though? The top hole or bottom hole. See first pic.

Second pic is of the egr. Should the temp probe be in that same hole as what my thumb is pointing at?

If i can rephrase the question, should the EGR temperature probe connect on the intake port or the exhaust port?
