I might be getting a German car...first one in decades

I'm really smitten with the 2004 VW Mk4 R32. They all seem to go for double what KBB lists them for, but if certain maintenance issues have been addressed (like a replacement timing chain at ~100k miles) they can easily be worth around $20k. That would be the most I have EVER paid for a vehicle, if I do get one. I had a VW GTI when I was a teenager, and I really liked it (which replaced a 1963 Triumph Herald I had that was stolen).

I've been drooling over Renault Clios with the mid-engine V6, and this VW is the closest I can get until the Clios became legal in the US (25 year import rule and all), and then I'll probably not be able to afford one.

Anyone out there have a 2004 VW R32?

Unfortunately KBB has been kind of out dated for market prices, especially since COVID hit. My theory is that some of these underpriced hot deals we see from time to time on craigslist are people blindly trusting the KBB value.

No experience with that generation, but I have driven a newer Golf R on some canyon roads and it was definitely a well refined car

those things are nightmares for non-maintenance parts since a lot of them are r32 specific.
