I have to admit, I now own a Mac! After a nasty virus infected our laptop and my ancient Desktop took a crap, we decided to pick up a new iMac. This thing is amazing!!! I like the fact that they are virtually virus proof (one of our main selling points) and all the features it has, plus the ability to run alot of windows programs if needed. Working on cleaning the laptop and transferring all the data needed from the laptop and desktop to an external drive so I can recover all our pics and what not. So far I'm loving this thing!

yeah yeah yeah.... a friend of mine works for Mac, that is all i hear aboot.

i guess i don't care either way. I like the customization (go figure) that you can work with a PC, and they are soooooo much cheaper. born and bread on um', i suppose.

I have always heard praise from graphic design folks about mac, that it is easier to use for such a purpose. other than that, I can't think of anything that a Mac can do that a PC can't....any thoughts?

Well they are really powerful and your right, the Graphic Design and Music stuff is top notch on these things, plus it'll teach me to play an instrument lol. I've always had PC's, used Mac's when I was younger in school but that was elementary school. If I was into gaming online then Mac wouldn't be the main choice but for all I used it for plus the lack of virus software for them, it's perfect for us.

Ya the music software is amazing, plus the "Microsoft Office" for a Mac is like half the price but you can save your files as word documents anyways so they can be read by a PC, cool in my book!

I have a Macbook Pro but I just bought a Dell PC so I can actually do school and work on it. The Excel for Mac's is severely limited compared to the one for PC's, and there are many other industry-standard applications that you can't run on a Mac.

Don't get me wrong, I love it. But I think in my situation it makes more sense to have a PC.

You can download windows onto Mac to run when you need those programs, but then that defeats the purpose lol. We have work laptops for all that stuff.

Cant stand macs. I've used them and hate the interface. More then twice the price of PC for less speed, cant customize them like a pc, not nearly as much software (though slowly getting better the last several years), cant really upgrade them, etc.

Macs arent virus proof, they've never been that popular so for a long time nobody really bothered writing virus'/trojans for them. Kind of like stealing Yugos. You can do it, but why?

Have you used the new ones? I actually like the interface and the speed is amazing so far. I agree a few years ago they stunk but I think they have came forward alot. They may not be virus proof but a program can't install itself without your permission, on a PC, if your logged in under your administrator (basically if you only have one user name, the main user has authority) the PC assumes anything that is installing is something you want since your the admin so just surfing a website you can get a virus on your computer without warning (what happened to my laptop)

eh I like our new computer. It wasn't much more than the PC's and after testing a bunch of them today we decided on this iMac. We don't game or do anything like that, mainly we just surf the web (alot) and photo edit and upload pics and what not, oh and skype.

This.

I'm typing this on my PC desktop I built myself primarily for photo editing. I built this myself, about 18 months ago, all parts purchased from Newegg, every part I put in this has a minimum 3 year warranty, and some parts are 5 years. I've got an intel 4 core 2.4GHZ processor, 8GB of RAM, 2 500GB HDD's in a RAID 1 mirror for data, and a 60 GB SSD for Windows 7 and a few photo editing programs.

I built it for around around $800. A Mac with similar specs (though none exist, no Macs at the time where available with RAID 1 or solid state drives) would have run me near to $1400, and only come with a 1 year warranty, and been difficult to upgrade. Wasn't really a difficult choice, save $600, get mirrored HDDs and a solid state OS drive, and get 2-4 more years under warranty... Yes, please.

I agree that Microsoft Office sucks and is overpriced, that's why I use Open Office, which is better, and FREE. I don't know about music editing software, but I'm sure there are some good ones out there for PC. Some people will tell you that you need a Mac if you want to get into photography or graphic arts, which I can tell you that is pure BS.

As for Viruses, I pay $40 a year for virus software (Kaspersky) for 3 computers. Kept it updated and I've never had a single problem. So with the $600 I saved building a PC over a Mac I can pay for virus protection for about 15 years  I can live with that. Oh... and it's a myth that there are no viruses for Macs, they're out there.

PS, I'm not a Mac 'hater' or anything. They work well, and if people prefer them great. I'm just sharing my experience, which is that they are way overpriced for what you get. Apple is GENIUS at marketing and lots of people have fallen for it. My 2 cents anyway, worth exactly what you paid for it. :p

EDIT: I'm also the first to admit that some brands of PC suck too, *coughDellcoughHPcough*. That's why from now on, I'm sold on building my own PC systems. This was the first one I'd really done, and I'm no computer whiz kid. I was surprised how easy (and cheaper then store bought) it was. Just double check that everything you get is compatible, and it goes together like Legos.

I bought my MacBook the first month they came out with the intel core 2 duo processor, so I think that was about 5.5 years ago. I use it every single day, I also travel with it in the flight deck with me so it gets banged around a lot. It still runs just as well as it did the first day I pulled it out of the box. 5.5 years old, all I've done is kept it clean. I don't mind spending money on quality, this thing is quality as a result I will never buy anything but Apple again. Congratulations Apple, you do it right.

Macs are ok. Just overpriced IMO. And I hate Apple.

Just dont turn into one of those smug "I own a mac" users. I hate those people.
The ones that think theyre better than everyone cause they own a Mac and cant get viruses and are teh l33t shyt.

And BTW... those nasty windows viruses come from porn sites! Lol, JK.

But really.. give it some time, the more Mac becomes popular the more interest those hackers will have in them.
I have been running windows since I was 7 years old and have never gotten any viruses.
There are some rogue Malwares that can be gotten in windows just by going to a random website, but most infections are user error.

Heck, even my system that I first built when I was 14 is still running good as when I built it.
The only thing is its starting to slow down, as newer applications require more resources, damn silverlight and flash stuff.

Im on Windows 7 now, and its awesome. I liked XP too, but it was very vulnerable. And for the price of this laptop, the performance is amazing.

What are you comparing it too? I agree, Apple makes tough laptops, but there are several companies that make super tough PC laptops too. That's the thing, because only Apple makes Mac stuff, it's all quality. But with hundreds of companies making PC laptops you have it all from top notch quality to total junk.

Just look at the US military, they abuse laptops more then you can imagine and they use Panasonic PCs.

I just can't justify the premium price for Apple stuff.

I do architectural drafting and Macs aren't great for drafting, but after dealing with the way autocad and other modeling softwares have destroyed my old laptop and I had bought another PC to run some software while I was in school. I ended up buying an Imac on a tax-free weekend a few years ago. I thought, "I'll get a student discount and its tax-free, why not?" I wasn't excited about the changing over, but whatever, I needed a new computer and it was all my laptop could do to run what I needed it to.

That was 4 years ago and I haven't spent 1 minute doing anything to it. The best part about it is that it just works! Every time. Never freezes up, never slows down. Like someone mentioned earlier, just like the day I bought it. I even convinced my (now) wife to buy one when she went back to school a few years ago and her MacBook has been the same way.

I would own another PC, but I probably wouldn't use it much because the Macs just seem to work all the time, every time.

See if I built my own computers and what not and was into customizing them like some of you or into gaming, then PC would be the choice but I just want something that works for what we do. We were looking at all-in-one desktops and the price between the PC and the iMac we got was only $250 (Mac was on sale) more than the comparable PC unit we were looking at (probably because the new all-in-one things are still priced high and somewhat new for PC and Mac has had them for years). We played on alot of them and really liked the "feel" on the Mac (mind you I had been anti-mac before yesterday. I used them when I was younger and the only thing I enjoyed on them was Oregon Trail  ) I know they aren't virusproof per se but it's MUCH harder to get one as of today. The Malware that wiped out my laptop came from Google Images, clicked on a 67 Mustang pic on a cardomain site and bam. I've somewhat fixed it so I can now at least see my files but having a hard time finding the culprit and getting rid of it. I'm not going to be one of the smug people as it's just a computer, my whole point in the thread wasn't saying one=better, more so a play on those Mac commercials and just happy with my new purchase. Mac's aren't for everyone, but I like mine :D Plus the wife loves it so that's a big plus, seeing as she picked it out she better like it.

What malware did you get? One of those stupid fake anti virus ones? Those suck lol.
Sometimes I have to resort to removing the registry files manually. Takes lots of work around to fully get rid of it.
Malwarebytes usually takes care of it though.

Im not a fan of the All in one PC's either. They arent as expandable as regular ones, and cost more. Now I can see why you went for the Mac.
I dislike netbooks and iPads. Those arent computers, they are scams.
