Since the topic is up. How can you identify you have found a true RS. The U-Pullit lots I go to have 2 door troopers out there but moldings are go, data plates faded or gone all together. Is a RS shorter than a regular 2 door Trooper??? I've been wondering when I see these 2 door Troopers in the yards.

Inquiring minds want to know!! :p
I have one of each. (we, wife and I)

The wheel base is substantially longer on the standard 2 dr it's around 107 inches and the RS is , I just found out 91.7" long.

Yes, the RS is the SWB (Short Wheel Base) Trooper. In the USA, as far as I know, they were only made with the 4 cylinder motor and a manual tranny.

The LWB 2-door Troopers ARE NOT RS Troopers.

Not an RS:

The SWB is a lot more nimble in the trees. For wheeling out west, such as Moab, a LWB is actually better.

funny story, when i got my trooper i didn't know much about isuzus, and i passed on a 93 rs with manual transmission with 90k for $3000, in favor of my 99 with 65k because it felt too small for me, if i only knew what i know now, i still see the rs around town every now and then, the guy that got it uses for his house painting business, he beat the crap out of it what a shame

I found a minty 1st gen RS for 2k 2 years ago. I kick myself for not buying it. Black on black, one owner, new head/gaskets.

I was told or read once that fewer than 800 1989 RS Trooper models were imported to the USA. All 1st gen RS Troopers can be identified by the roof seam.

My 1989 RS Trooper with 31s.

Damn roof Seam!!!!!

I keep getting water dripping from the headliner on the drivers side and is soaks the carpet and gets the seat wet. I am pretty sure that the seam is the culprit.
Any RS owners have the same issue and if so what to do to fix it?

Probably leaking in somewhere along the top of the windshield.

No problem with the roof. Replaced the windshield gasket when windshield cracked. If the gasket is original, it likely leaks. Mine was crumbling.

Great truck! I haven't seen any RS true SWB here, only a handful of LWB. Very rare ride indeed.

When I was in school a buddy had a stock 2 door I didnt think much of it then cause I had a jeep, now id trade that heep in a second if he still had it. He hated it so much, yet it was so nice he had a terrible time selling it for even $1200 in 2007.

Cronk has both. Maybe he can chime in.
I can't tell you much, haven't had the RS on the road yet, little lone the trails.... I'll be sure to report when I do. The little that I have driven it, there is a notable difference in the way it drives. I imagine it will be very nimble on the trails.

I havent had a problem with the roof seam on mine yet. That may just be because its been in AZ its whole life though lol. Though the paint is starting to chip off it and you can see the whiteish caulk they used to seal it. They are a good amount lighter than the LWB troopers too, and you can really notce it on the freeway. Climbing hills on the highway isnt as tortureous as in the lwb models but with the 2.6 yore still not going to fly up them. Single piece driveline too so you dont have to worry about carrier bearings and stuff. There are also a couple of strange bosses that stick down from the frame near the tranny crossmember that are not on any of the LWB models. I have yet to figure out what they are for. :?

I bought mine for $900 bucks with a bad headgasket. 8)

I fixed the headgasket but eventally sawpped the motor out for a later, 2nd generation 2.6 from a 96 rodeo. The truck has never let me down. I probably put at least 75 miles of hauling my dirtbike on a 4x8 flatbed trailer behind it every weekend, and she still runs like a top. The weirdest thing I remember when I first started driving it was going over speed bumps. I was used to the long wheelbase going: bump......bump, but when I first hit one in the RS it was more like a Buh-BUMP! lol.
