Hi John,
Are you looking at your temp guage when it does this? If its running warm at idle, it will do this in an attempt to cool itself. Also, check for a loose vaccum line, and check the timing.

Mine (89 2.6l) does the same thing, but only with the O2 sensor plugged in. The temp is perfect when it happens, nice and cool. If I unplug the sensor the loping will stop and not happen at all. I dont like a motor that is acting possesed! Try unpluggin your o2 sensor and see what happens. I am going to get a new o2 sensor and see what happens with a new one plugged in, Its my ECM is running DOS or FORTRAN or somethng  . Let me know what you get if its till an issue....
PEACE

Hey, im new to the forum, but i know exactly what ur talking about. I am having the same issues, i have had 2 different ppl look at it both times for 3 weeks. They always say its some sensor, from tps to 02, or one said it was an intake leak. They have still not fixed it, when i start out, i turn on the max ac, and tap the gas til it warms up, then it idles right...when it wants, then sometimes as i am pulling up to a light, it will start the lopeing thing, to stop it i hit the gas to 2k, and let off, it quits most of the time. I dont know what to do,b/c i am not flashing any codes and no light s are on or nething. I love my troop, and i want to get that fixed.
