Having a problem with a 2002 Rodeo. Randomly, when it is in park, the gear shift will stick and will not come out of park. There is a pin that isn't clearing when the button is pushed in. I fumbled with something around it and finally got it to clear, but it is still happening. Took it to the dealership and they said they can't find anything wrong with it like usual. Any ideas?
Well, you can take the console out and do a little bit of troubleshooting. There should be two interlocks that prevent you from taking it out of park. One is tied to the key, to ensure that someone isn't putting it into neutral and stealing it. The other is tied to the brake, to make sure that some kid doesn't pull a running vehicle out of park without really trying. Both of those are probably cable operated.
You could also see if tapping the brakes or fiddling with the key unsticks it next time this happens.
