For Those that Converted to Round Eye Headlights

363 Views 7 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  cmf5
I was very lucky enough to score an intact round eye headlight setup at a nearby Pick-n-Pull yesterday. After months of collecting and searching I've finally got the pieces and am ready to start the replacement. I've read several of the great threads/tutorials on the forum about guys' experiences doing this. Unfortunately, when it comes to the turn signal wiring, the threads that I've read are either a) not exactly like-for-like because they used international turn signals (usually from eBay sellers in Asia), or actually have different wiring connections from the pre-87 side marker to the harnesses/pigtails in my '90 Trooper.

So, for the guys that have successfully wired up a pre-87 side marker to an 87+ Trooper, can you look at this pic and tell me which wires do I need to splice with which? Thanks!

Need some clarifying photos of the left two harnesses. Are those from the 87+? I'd need to see the end opposite the bulb for both the stock turn signal bulb wires, then I can match them up for you.

Awesome. Yeah, the two harnesses on the left are from the 87+, they plug into the truck's wiring harness. Same wires from the truck plug into the pigtail and come out the other end. Here's a pic of the two sets inside the truck.

Perfect! Thanks for the photos. Hope this helps.

I've annotated some photos to better illustrate how everything goes together. In the below image, I've labeled the two connectors that are connected to your truck's harness.
  • The one circled in red & labeled "A" is the connector for your square headlight's built-in parking lamp/DRL. This light is an additional parking lamp, something not present in the pre-87 grille setup. As such, you can tape it off and stow it aside. We won't be using it.
  • The one circled in orange & labeled "B" is the connector running to your side marker, and handles all turn signal and parking light functions. This is the only one we'll be using—everything plugs into it.

Time for a second photo. Below, I've circled in red the section that goes from "A" to your 87+ square headlight. Confirm that's where it goes—the bulb should fit into the backside, separate from the main low beam/high beam setup. This stub can be reinstalled into your square headlight for safe keeping.

I've also circled the side of the other connector in orange. This plugs into "B". The blue side is what you'll be splicing into your OE pre-87 side markers. There are two wires for each bulb: power and ground. The large bulb is the turn signal, the small bulb is the parking light. 87+ side markers only have two light "sections" (hence two bulbs) but pre-87s have three. But two sections are linked together, so on pre-87 side markers even though there's three bulbs, there are only two separately controlled "zones." This is what makes splicing everything up so straight forward; two into two.

Alright, now we know what's what. Let's check out what wires splice where. There are four wires that head out of the pre-87 side marker, but they converge to three after the plug. You cut it at the three, after the connector, which is great - it allows you to keep the side marker intact and uncut. The three wires are #1: ground (black), #2: large amber turn signal (green with blue stripe), and #3: mini amber + clear (green with red stripe, goes two-into-one before the connector; this is what reduces it from four to three wires). See photo below. What I'm calling clear might also just be a second mini amber section depending on the marker design.

Now, the below photo is the annotated other side you'll be splicing the into the marker connector (#1, #2, and #3 from previous image).

Finally, here's how the splicing works:
  • 1 into 5 & 7
  • 2 into 4
  • 3 into 6

Wow! This really great, and much more than I could have expected. Thank you. I owe you a 6-pack. This forum is a national treasure.

I'm waiting for my headlight adapters and some fasteners/clips to come in and then I'll be able to get to work on this.

I've learned so much and solved so many problems through this forum that giving some back is the least I can do.

Let me know if you have any hiccups, I'm happy to help. If you need any of those plastic grommets, I have extra, happy to get some in the mail.

cmf5, I just wanted you to know that your instructions were perfect, even for a non-wrenching simpleton like me. I followed your directions (plus all the great details of your round eye thread including mounting instructions/hardware shopping list) and I couldn't be happier with the results. At first I thought I'd screwed it up, but it turns out I had a bad fuse, and then, later, several bad bulbs (I guess after 30+ years it was to be expected). Now it's all good. Thanks again!

(Now I'm just waiting for my grille badge from eBay ... hoping the mounting isn't too much of a pain...)

Congrats, it looks great!

You’ll most likely have to get creative with mounting the center emblem depending which one you found. Jealous of your perfect front bumper!
