ok, maybe not to high on the dumb scale but..

just picked up a 93 rodeo, seems in fairly decent shape over all. Its a Nevada ride so has seen a lot of sun and dry heat in its life and has around 140k on the clock. Has some moderate lifter chatter, no clue as to timing belt, has some interesting creaks and assorted noises, some coming from the CV area (maybe)... etc... Also has a random check engine light that isnt consistent as to when it will come on, sometimes on the highway at 70mph other times around town at 35mph...

What are the "most" important areas for me to check for issues, and what areas are the most important for me to deal with in a preventive maintenance frame of mind.

thanks!

Just give it s good shake down jack tongue front turn the wheel and shake each side in and out from the top of the tire. With the suspension in full droop look at the cv boots and tie rod ends. Then set it down and jack up as close to the wheel as possible then shake again, feel for play in the upper A arm bushings. For the rear check the U joints and work your way back looking at all the bushings in the leaf springs and sway bar if equipped. Look for bolts that have a streak or rust line. That a sign of loose bolts.
