what are the plates that are behind the disc brakes for? I assume protection, but what is it going to protect exactly? Any reason not to remove it? One of mine bent up pretty badly and im not sure if i should take the time to either straighten it out or replace it.

They're called splash shields or dust shields. Lots of applications run without them.

Yup, mine are gone. They were completely rusted out and just flapped around. I cut off the spot welds and don't have to deal with them grinding against my rotors anymore. Haven't ran into any problems yet.

They help keep road spray off your brakes. They should be there unless you live somewhere where it doesn't rain or snow.

I live somewhere where it rains, snows, and salts. Literally, like salt pours down from the clouds.

Haha, just kidding! :) They sure do salt a lot out here though.

Like I mentioned, I've never encountered any problems on either truck with this setup. Lots of rust out here and it isn't worth repairing to me. Rotors still look great.

I don't have them and it rains all the time here. Everything works fine. Most off roaders remove them so rocks do no jamb in there.
