clutch question, opinions

So, after looking around a bit, I found a local garage willing to replace my clutch in my 88 for 473$, parts and labor...$173 parts from local Napa, $300 labor..

I've been shopping around quite a bit and got estimates ranging from $500 to $650, I don't think I can beat $473, and I don't have the skills to install it myself. Is this a good price in your opinion? If anybody on here has paid for a clutch job, what did you pay, parts and labor? I think I'm gonna bite the bullet and go for it.

It really doesn't take a bunch of skill to change the clutch, just lots of patience and a good memory to get all the bolts in place.

The price sounds good at $473.00 Just make sure that they use OEM parts. I did mine using on of those kits that supposedly fit several applications from NAPA and the pressure plate was wrong. Never could get the clutch bled out properly. Had to take it apart again to put the right pressure plate in.

A pretty good rule of thumb with most independent shops is: Labor=parts+ a little. Most regular jobs the parts are 40-50% and labor is 50-60%. Some jobs are harder than other and the labor rate reflects that. $500 for a clutch job with a Napa clutch is not a bad price around these parts. Make sure they replace the pilot bearing and throwout bearing and any leaking main seals.
