Just a dumb/stupid question but i want to be sure. My Passport has a bad front drive shaft u-joint. I want to pull it to drop off at the shop to have balanced/rebuilt. Is there any harm in running it disconnected? I obviously can't use 4wd then. Just wanted to make sure i don't damage the drivetrain.

It's a 2001 with the SOTF mechanism. That doesn't constitute all-time 4wd does it?

You can run it that way regardless of TOD or 4wd. I installed manual hubs and front locker on the VX, same as removing the driveshaft, TOD just flashes angrily at me, but has no effect on the performance. Been that way for 2.5 years. I drove the last 4 months with no front driveshaft since my CV boot tore and filled wiht mud at spring meet. No problems, just got a new installed a few weeks ago. (by new, I went to the yard and got one out of a trooper, lol, no way I am paying 800 bucks for a new one)
