I know it's rash, but can I assume the plug on the 'shelf' of the auto transmission pan is the fluid level 'check' and fill-it plug ?

Yes the higher of the two is the fill and the check plug. You will need to check the fluid level after the tranny is about 120 degrees and run it through the gears and then check.

Isuzu also states you must check ATF level with the tranny in neutral, not park. I dunno if it pumps ATF differently between P & N, but that's what they say!
