I've got a 98 Troop with 165k miles on it. I'm burning lots of oil, with no real noticeable difference in performance (although maybe the change has been so slow that I haven't noticed the decrease)

After poking around a lot on this forum and many other Isuzu related sites I've been delighted to find out that many other owners are having this problem. Well actually I'm not delighted that they have the problem, just that I'm not alone and with all these great minds thinking about it, the problem will eventually be figured out.

The things I've seen recommended (in no particular order) are:

1. Replace the PCV valve
2. Clean the EGR
3. Use seafoam to clean the engine
4. Use a different oil, namely Rotella 15w40

What is a PCV valve? Which is the better way to go about cleaning the EGR, spraying carb cleaner in there or taking it out physically and poking out the gunk? Is the seafoam effective? How about the Rotella oil?

I'm not very mechanical, and my schedule is very busy right now, so I wan to take my car to a more knowledgable person than myself. Does anybody know of any good mechanics that are well versed in late model Isuzu's in the San Diego area?

Failing that, I have a check engine light on right now, what would be the best way to check what the code is? (read: best = cheapest, because i'm broke)
