I read all posts about Teds swap. But he have older Trooper. Anybody know, is A340H fit in TOD Trooper?
I'm ok with crossmember mods and other mechanical mods.
Questions:
1. Is it possible to utilize 4L30E bellhousing with A340H? Or tranny from 4WD Axiom will fit to the 6VE1 engine?

2. Is Trooper ECU with TOD will control A340H? (I understand, I have to do some connectors work)

3. Anybody done swap like this?
Thank you.

I'd say it will bolt up, but that would be the end of the fun.

I don't think you will be able to control the Aisin with the stock ECU.

NO ON THE BELL HOUSING , COMPLETELY DIFF DESIGN, YES THE A340 FROM THE 2004 RODEO OR AXIOM WILL FIT YOUR ENG AND BOLT RIGHT UP, BUT YOU WILL HAVE TO DO YOUR OWN WIRING AND CONTROL, THE ECU OR PCM FORM THE TROOPER WILL NOT WORK CORRECTLY, , THE EASY OPART IS THE ECU IS A STAND ALONE UNIT NOT BUILT INTO THE MAIN PCM.

thanks for reply.
Another question:
What is better to do:
1. 4L30E with custom torgue converter
or install A340H+transfer case from AXIOM?

Would it even be that hard if one was to do a 4.3L to just go with the 4L60/ 60-E transmission and a transfer case out of a blazer/s10. I think it would be easier to get driveshafts to work with the GM yokes on the T-case then it would be to adapt a 4L30E to a motor its not designed for.

need Axiom electric schematics. Possible, I will build custom transmission/transfercase controller, which will comunicate with Troopers ECU.

Just one quick questions, does it needs the transfer case? (bolts to driveshaft directly) I want to make something custom as well, not rebuilding a 4L30-E for 10k miles......

I got transmission with TOD transfercase from 2004 Axiom.
It will be delivered at Tuesday. Will post some pics then.
Mechanically looks like almost direct swap. Will be some tricks with electric/electronics. I hate to pay 1.5K for universal TCU. It is nice to have that unit, probably will save a lot of time, but I just can not afford it.
On that point I do not know yet, what to do with TCU.
Posible solution:
adopt TCU from Jeep or Toyota
to built a custom TCU.

I did try to sell. But
1. I do not want to sell it to random repson.
2. Nothing on the market right now is better then my Trooper.
So, I decided to continue improovement and will use it for purpose.

I got documentation for 2004Axiom.
The good news:
1. TOD control unit is same as Trooper TOD control unit.
I have two options here. Use my old transfer case with all wiring, or switch to unit from Axiom. In this case I have to add some control circuits, like 4WD electrical switch e.t.c Not a big problem.

2. 2004 Axiom used separated Transmission Control Unit, not like ECU in the Trooper. TCU communicate to the ECU via CAN bus.

On that point I do not know yet how to merge Trooper ECU with Axiom TCU.
Will do more research.

Received shipment today from qualityautoparts.com
Instead of 2004 Axiom they sent 2004 Rodeo unit (no TOD).
On that point, I do not know which one is better. I think, my transfer case will fit to this transmission.
Transmission itself looks .... salty. But all sensors and cables are not damaged mechanically.

Still need manual for AISIN 30-40LS transmission. It is different from A340H!
Based on electrical diagrams and descriptions 30-40LS has a pressure control solenoid for smooth shifting with PWM control (same as 4L30E),
same two solenoids for shifting gears. And TCC solenoid. Looks like PWM controlled also. The set of sensors are the same.
I think it will be possible to run 30-40LS with Trooper ECU.
It will be great to be able re-program Trooper ECU for control 30-40LS directly.

Finally got some time to continue this project. Now old 4L30E is removed.
The transfer case is unbolted from transmission. Good news the length of 30-40LS is the same as 4L30e. I think, will be no problem with cross-member installation.

Some bad news. When I try to unbolt gears switch arm from switch shaft on the new transmission, I broke threaded end of the shaft. Is it possible to replace shaft without disassembling whole unit? Will deal with this after NY.
Still think how to connect new transmission to the Trooper ECU. It is possible, to fabricate bracket for old transmission position switch, but for me way easy to built relays module for emulate old switch and utilize 30-40LS switch.
Or will use more expensive solution:

Will continue posting.

Latest update.
AW30-40LS checked, re-sealed. New filter is installed. Ready for installation.
I got PCM-2000 transmission control unit. There are a lot of wires need to be routed. Looks like I will spend more time for electrical work, then for mechanical.
I ordered original dipstick for Axiom 2004 from isuzuparts.com
Will put transmission on over coming weekend.

AW30-40LS is installed.
Mechanically it was almost no problems to put it in.
One simple problem with ugly solution. It was impossible to connect transfer case when sensor in the stock position. I use "bracket" to fix sensor in position.

Now I have ATF dipstick:

Electrical parts almost ready. Need few more hours for complete setup.

WOW! great work vovkus!
i have an 2001 SWB Trooper with 6VE1 and 4L30E and i will definitely consider this swap when my 4L30E will die on me.
i hear from other trooper owners about their 4L30E dying on them and they keep spending big bucks for rebuilds.. i believe that you have found the solution for a fundamental problem. :salute:
