Sounds like the valve timing jumped or isnt set properly. Did this happen after a t-belt changeout? You may have a cam sproket off a revolution.

I haven't delved into my 98 Passport to change it's timing belt yet so i don't know if they are separate belts for both sides or it it's all one big belt.

If it's two belts then you very well have a broken or badly slipped t-belt. If it's one belt then you have bigger problems.
