I was backing up on an incline (friend's driveway) in 4-H mode when my transmission started making grinding/whining noises and froze up. Wouldn't budge, and wheels were locked even when the shifter was in Neutral. Wouldn't shift into 2-H no matter what, but finally got it into 4-L, and drove it home that way. My mechanic says it's the transfer case and can cost me up to $1,500 to fix.
First, is his assessment plausible; could it be the transfer case and not something else?
Second, assuming it is the transfer case, what should it cost to replace w/ used parts - is his $1,500 estimate reasonable?
Third, any idea where I can get a used transfer case?
Thanks!
