My 95 Trooper started to have a knocking sound from my engine. I've done some research and people say that it might be the belt tensioner. When it sits in idle and is below 2500 RPM it makes the loud knocking noise. But when it goes over 3000 RPM the loud knocking noise goes away. I have no idea what it might be. I changed the oil to 10w 30and a puraltor filter. Is there anybody out there that has encountered this problem and solved it? Please help. Thanks.

Yes, that is the timing belt tensioner. Not too big a deal even though it sounds for all the world like a piston rod knock. Not very expensive either, ~$70 part. Suggest you PM JLEMOND for a OEM replacement.

I replaced one in a campground, so it is definitely a DIY project if you are even a little handy.
