88 2.6, CEL on for few seconds?

So driving down a mile or 2 stretch, the CEL went on. Now it has happened before, but that was when I was low on coolant. After a top off, hadn't had problems since (3 weeks ago maybe) I was doing about 17-1800 rpm, and maybe doing 40? (speedo is whacky in the morning) The light was on for at most 10 seconds. I let of the gas pedal ever so slightly, and the light turned off.

Now I know I cant use a scanner since its not an obd system. Anyone have similar problems?

Should be able to connect the wires under the center console and pull the codes.
I know how to pull them, but wouldnt I need a code to check for a code? Could I get a code without the CEL? I mean as soon as I could pull over to check, it would be off. There is no feasible way for me to check when its on.
Even though the CEL goes out, you still should be able to pull a code in memory if the CEL came on/off. Have you tried to see if there was any codes stored?

If you read the link that MarkB.NV gave, you'll see how to read the code yourself.

Connect the wires under the center console.

Turn the key to the on position, without starting the vehicle.

Count the flashes of the cel light.

Etc....
