4WD malfunction

99' Trooper here. Read several threads about the VSV's problems but I could not find any symptom that looked like mine.

The CHECK message has been always ON since I have the trooper but 4WD worked fine the times it was used. Around one month ago I noticed the 4wd lights started to flash intermittently, just the front wheels. Then I started hearing a clunking noise in the wheels when turning. Tried engaging the 4wd and then disengaging just to check it was on the correct position. Issue was still there. Took it to the shop and they removed the VSVs. They said they tend the fail and I need new ones. I'm currently driving it without the VSVs and no more weird noises on the wheels.

The question is if I do actually need to buy new ones. And if so, where can I find them?
Can they be fixed? I saw a Youtube video where the guy removes them and uses WD-40 I believe or any other cleaner and re-install them and he claimed it worked.

These are the current VSVs.

I will appreciate your comments.

Thanks.

Chris.

I repair and rebuild them. But it seems more likely that your cv axles are clunking no ?

Before removing the VSVs, you could hear when taking a turn metals hitting metals, as soon as I step into front position noise was gone but the 4wd lights were still on.
They removed the VSVs, and no more 4WD lights on the dashboard and no metal noises when making a turn.
I have new VSV solenoids in-stock.
How much for both?

That makes no sense. The locking collar is not spring loaded so something must have engaged or disengaged it before they removed them. Like as in it was probably in 4wd and something is broken/worn and now it's in 2wd. Vsvs do not make noise.
